Bostonista doesn’t need another reason to adore the Museum of Science, but last night’s event, Seamless: Computation Couture—the sold-out nerdfest-meets-design fashion show—sealed the deal. Project Runway castoff Steven Rosengard, whose ill-fated encounter with glue and a wedding dress led to his dismissal on Episode 5, emceed the show filled with algorithm-produced knitwear, WiFi-detecting jackets, and solar-paneled necklaces.
First conceived by the Weekly Dig’s lifestyle editor, Christine Liu, and buddy Nick Knouf in 2005, Seamless has ballooned from its humble beginnings at the MIT Media Lab into a 1,000+ throng of grad-student types, fashion mavens, and odd characters (yes, we mean you with the LED-woven bathrobe and hat). After two long days of rocking designer duds for the camera, Bang Camaro were eager to show off their newly polished fashion sense last night in a private show at the Middle East Downstairs. Like a proud Tim Gunn at a Project Runway finale, Bostonista approached the Central Square venue with high hopes and, regretfully, without earplugs.
Both in fashion and rock badassery, the boys did not disappoint. Before band co-founder Alex changed into his tougher stage garb, we spotted him wearing a surprisingly demure striped pull-over, with his usually flowing locks tamed in a ponytail. Fashion is all about experimenting, Alex! Way to go! (more…)
Although we here at Bostonista fancy ourselves rock stars, it doesn’t take much to blow our cover. Day 2 of our spring fashion shoot began as crew members dragged themselves to location, the post-30 year olds among us clinging desperately to our coffee and issuing the typical second day complaints: Why is it so cold in here? When can we start already?
But it only took a few hydrangeas and creative hairdressing to get us in the mood for fashion. Women’s stylist J. Sybylla Smith had spent her morning gathering inspiration and props from her neighborhood florist, which hairstylist Michael Albor of the Loft Salon + Day Spa worked into model Corey’s dramatic look. There was a time when I could spend hours, days, even entire vacations, shopping for myself. I could make lists and lists of things without which my life would be incomplete: sweaters, boots, scarves, sunglasses, CDs, coasters, cheese trays, duvet covers, coffee-table books, earrings, scented candles. And each of these items had to be exactly right: the skirt that hit the spot on my thigh to the most flattering effect, the jeans that flared to just the right proportion so I could wear them with either boots or flats.
In other words, I was self-involved and materialistic. I was single without a child.
I was reminded of those glorious days last night when I spent several hours of my post-work evening shopping online for warm-weather clothing for my two-year-old daughter for a beach vacation we’ll be taking at the end of the month. (more…)
Fashion shoots are always highly collaborative endeavors, but this season we really outdid ourselves with a combined crew of nearly 50, which included photographers, stylists, models, producers, hair and makeup, assistants, interns, videographers, a 20-man rock band, and a Chow mix named Mabel.
RV driver Joe Diamond powered our movable wardrobe through the very un-spring-like streets of Boston and beyond yesterday, where we began the 15-hour workday at the Junction Deli on Exchange Street in Lynn.
Over the course of the early afternoon, proprietors Charlie and Dottie Christopolous fueled our hungry bunch with more than 60 pancakes, 8 dozen eggs, some doughnuts, a truly disturbing amount of bacon, and, likely, all the cheese in Lynn. We’re here to say: Models do eat. So do interns. (more…)
Are you itching to party like a celebutante this weekend? You’re in luck, as Hollywood busts into Beantown for three unique events at local hotspots this Saturday night. (more…)
While troubled ice cream maker Toscanini’s appears poised to rise from the brink of extinction, Alpha Omega seems to have met its fate. Bostonista was first to report that the Handa family had fled to India, leaving the chain’s employees and customers in the lurch.
Early this morning, a bankruptcy court judge authorized the sale of Alpha Omega’s assets to a group of investors.
SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched episode 9 of Project Runway, Season 4, you might want to stop reading now.
This Bostonista reporter took the day off yesterday (and uncovered this blog, rejoice!), so was well-rested for watching the show last night. A pre-show flash of scenes hinted that the challenge was denim. Turns out it involved yet another mad 3-minute dash for outfit parts—a somewhat tired charade—but the challenge was nonetheless satisfying, with designers asked to use pairs of Levi’s jeans to create a modernized version of the iconic 501. I don’t own a Blackberry. I have a deeply-rooted distrust of ringing cell phones. I send out about four of the 200 texts I pay for each month. And when my sister accidentally put my iPod through the wash, I could honestly tell her it wasn’t that big of a deal.
So I was understandably alarmed yesterday, when I felt my first-ever pang of gadget withdrawal during a morning Spin class. Why was I so sluggish? What was that unfamiliar feeling of discomfort? Was I dying?
In John Waters’s 1998 film, Pecker, Edward Furlong wisely said, “Life is nothing if you’re not obsessed.” We couldn’t agree more.
One of our year-round obsessions is achieving a season-appropriate sun-kissed glow without looking orange or getting skin cancer. Currently, our faux toaster of choice is High Noon by Boston-based beauty company, Fresh. (more…)
