A Biking to Work Primer

1209400591Now that it’s spring, Bostonians with chutzpah are remembering the bikes they’d left rotting in garages and basements. That coupled with the imminent environmental crisis makes this a perfect time to share a few riding pointers to ensure that you have a safe and pleasant trip. Here are my quals: I’ve been bicycle commuting for about 15 years in Boston and in Philly, daily distances ranging from 5 miles to 22 miles roundtrip, from 22 degrees to 102 degrees.

So let’s jump in! (more…)

Aging Rock Stars, Part II… Target: Aging Fans

1208195207The lobby of the Somerville Theater was a blue/gray sea of denim, chambray, and fleece. “Yikes!” I said to my husband. “These are my peers?” We were there to see Joe Jackson, Brit rocker of olde, and as I wondered if that nasty AARP card issued automatically at my big 5-0 could have maybe gotten us a discount, I also registered more than a little remorse that this is how my generation was choosing to express itself sartorially. I should have worn my wig!

The mostly male and solidly middle-aged crowd was as entertaining as the band, fervently swinging to the beat while singing along full throttle. I felt like a fly in a car ride of teens on a beer run. Except this time, the elation I was witnessing related to temporary liberation from pressures due to recession, marriage, and parenting. Solutions for a Head-Scratcher

1207150405Our new dark Jil Sander suit has met its nemesis. No, it’s not static. Or even sweat stains. Much worse: Dandruff.

Giving fashion-conscious Bostonians the hair-pulling task of figuring out what to wear each morning since time began, the weather here shouldn’t surprise us anymore. And yet, it does every time we look over our shoulder when wearing a dark top and and find our own personal snowstorm has fallen. Plus, the accompanying itch can be quite a you-know-what.

It’s the changes in weather patterns from brutal wintry gusts to pleasant spring breezes that can leave skin screaming for relief. And though you don’t lotion it up every day, your scalp is skin too. Recommends Michael Albor of The Loft Salon, “Treat your dandruff problem just like you would dry skin on your body—use an astringent, then exfoliate, and then moisturize.”

To soothe your scalp and combat those pesky white flakes, we tracked down three products dry-headed gals and guys should try. If anything, your new suit (or LBD) will thank you. (more…)

Salon Ambiguity, Round Two: Tips on Tipping

1206032288If responses to our annoyance at blowout ambiguity are any indication, most well-coiffed Newbury salon patrons believe extra blow-dry charges are criminal. Case closed.

But since we’re on the topic, let’s tackle another area of salon uncertainty: gratuities. Specifically, are we supposed leave something when the salon owner styles our hair? (We’ve occasionally been handed envelopes for the owner, which we thought defied conventional etiquette.) And what percentage of our services’ total cost are we supposed to be tipping?

Since our mothers are woefully far away, we decided it was time to call in another expert. Enter Jodi Smith of Marblehead-based Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, who provided some modern mom-caliber advice. (more…)

Bostonista Writes Back: To Button, or Not to Button

1205946219Style-strapped locals often look to Bostonista for advice on a wide range of topics, such as what to wear, how to decorate, and which area hotel to visit for an afternoon tryst (seriously).

This week’s query:

My office is business casual, which means I don’t have to wear a tie to work. That’s great news, considering I’d rather hang myself by a silk noose than tie a Windsor every morning, but it leaves me befuddled over what to do with my collar. Do I button down its flaps like I would with a tie? Or do I let them hang free and loose to flap in the wind?

Sincerely,

Collar? I barely even know her. (more…)

Dear Esteemed Fashion Expert, I’ll be spending Christmas at my girlfriend’s parents’ home, and am dreading it. The problem isn’t her parents, who are lovely people but rather her parents’ bodies and the soap that rubs all over them. There’s only one shower, and only one bar of soap in that shower. I don’t want clean myself with the same soap that they’ve rubbed all over themselves.

In the past, I’ve just stood under the water for a prolonged period of time. Once, I even tried using the shampoo as body soap, but it left an uncomfortable residue. Is there a way around this slippery situation? (more…)
