SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen episode 10 of Project Runway, season 4, you might want to stop reading now.
Project Runway’s week off yielded a meet and greet with Steven Rosengard, as well as a terrific Tim Gunn appearance on The Daily Show (we can tell you’ve got a man-crush, Jon, and we are with you!). All very enlightening, but we were still glad when the show returned this past Wednesday. It was an episode not to be watched lying down.
Bostonista sprung into proper posture when the challenge was revealed—to create a fashion-forward outfit for a WWE diva—and nearly spilled Swiss Miss on our couture when Tim Gunn threaded his lanky frame into the makeshift Project Runway boxing ring. “Grandpa has difficulty with these ropes,” he joked. After two long days of rocking designer duds for the camera, Bang Camaro were eager to show off their newly polished fashion sense last night in a private show at the Middle East Downstairs. Like a proud Tim Gunn at a Project Runway finale, Bostonista approached the Central Square venue with high hopes and, regretfully, without earplugs.
Both in fashion and rock badassery, the boys did not disappoint. Before band co-founder Alex changed into his tougher stage garb, we spotted him wearing a surprisingly demure striped pull-over, with his usually flowing locks tamed in a ponytail. Fashion is all about experimenting, Alex! Way to go! (more…)

This Bostonista reporter took the day off yesterday (and uncovered this blog, rejoice!), so was well-rested for watching the show last night. A pre-show flash of scenes hinted that the challenge was denim. Turns out it involved yet another mad 3-minute dash for outfit parts—a somewhat tired charade—but the challenge was nonetheless satisfying, with designers asked to use pairs of Levi’s jeans to create a modernized version of the iconic 501. SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen episode 8 of Project Runway, Season 4, you might want to stop reading now.
Bostonista attended a sneak peek of the teleportation movie Jumper last night at MIT, and in the rare moments we were neither drooling over Hayden Christensen (present, along with the director Josh Liman and two well-spoken MIT professors who explained the science of teleportation) nor laughing hard at the science jokes, we checked out the fashion choices of the MIT students.
Turns out there is a high variability, from quite fashion-forward (think Diana from Project Runwayseason 2, naturally) to a bunch who came wearing Darth Vader masks. Thusly inspired, Bostonista headed home to watch the new episode of our favorite show (reduced to snagging a ride from a friend, as the professors weren’t able to bring us a safe model for teleportation. Yet.)(more…)
I admit I’m late to the party, but it wasn’t until last week that I realized that on top of all the other things I so inartfully juggle (parenting, my job, my husband’s job, our daughter’s meals, her pre-school applications, cleaning, pretending to read important books, etc.) I now have to add another: Mad Men.
I usually resist cable series television. For years, I bristled under the tyranny of Sunday night HBO—I didn’t sign on to The Sopranos until way late in the game, and never took up Deadwood, The Wire, or Six Feet Under. And, so, lumping it in with the others, I initially dismissed Mad Men, the AMC series about an advertising agency in 1960 Manhattan.
But it had gotten to the point where I was smacking into references to the series at every turn and started to feel too far out of the conversation for my comfort. My husband, who considered his “To Do” list too long to add another item, begged off, and so a few nights ago, I settled into bed, grabbed the laptop and downloaded my first episode from iTunes. Five hours later, at about 2 a.m., I had to force myself to stop. (more…)

Gentle readers, Bostonista once again found herself coming home late Wednesday night from a tough week at the magazine, but the promise of taffeta and organza made us wake up, reapply the mascara, and pay attention. (more…)

After we waited as calmly as possible for three LONG weeks since the last episode, offsetting P.R. hunger by repeatedly watching the promo for this week’s fun-filled field trip to the Hershey’s store in Times Square, it was finally showtime! And sticking with the candy theme, red was the episode’s signature color from start to finish, opening with all female contestants smacking bright crimson lips (did they share a stick?) and ending with Heidi clad in a bright scarlet dress at the runway show.
When Tim, an almost unhumanly bright flower in the wee hours of the morning, woke the bleary-eyed contestants (all of whom could stand to redesign their sleepwear, hello!), it was sheer delight to behold. And equally delicious, the well-mannered woman, who turned out to be the excited face of Hershey’s, then served up a heaping spoonful of look-I’m-on-TV! entertainment—a sentiment seldom provided by reality television these days. I’m ashamed to admit this to other Project Runway fans, but two nights ago I almost gave up our favorite show in favor of sleep. I’ve worked late all week, and got home way past midnight. Still, even though I was feeling somewhat like a member of the cast—sewing a dress made of corn husks and hoping that they won’t dry too much by morning, looking bleary eyed, craving salty snacks—I was inspired by the possibility of a dazzling runway silhouette. Which is why I stayed up to watch Bravo’s replay at 1:30 a.m.
