We already know that the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard, in their quest to open a casino in Massachusetts, have partnered with the Seneca Nation of Indians, experienced gamers from western New York. But could another alliance, this time with Connecticut’s Mohegan Tribe (of Mohegan Sun fame), be on the horizon?

“I wouldn’t rule that out,” says Mohegan Tribe Chief of Staff Chuck Bunnell. “The two tribal nations have a long history of communication and are continuing in that vein of openness. At this point in time there is no agreement. But certainly we have a lot of mutual respect and we continue to communicate.”

We here at Boston Daily would like to think that today’s hearing on gambling-related social ills in the legislature is all about figuring out whether or not we should, in fact, invite casinos to open their doors in the Commonwealth. But it’s not. This is about brute, all-encompassing political warfare between Governor Deval Patrick and Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi.

They’ve been at loggerheads basically since the day Patrick walked in the door. That said, this thing is escalating a lot faster than we thought it would. (more…)

It’s not often that dolls stir us to write a post, but this video is — dare we say it — Caddyshack-funny. Boise-bred and Cambridge-based country singer Eilen Jewell’s second album, Letters from Saints and Sinners is one of my favorites of 2007, by turns rollicking and pretty, with the sort of dusty, traditional authenticity that your average local wouldn’t expect to come out of Boston. Yet it did, and Jewell—who has drawn national press and comparisons to Gillian Welch and Jolie Holland—has been touring widely with local roots stalwarts Jerry Miller (the best guitarist I’ve ever seen) and bassist Johnny Sciascia (of Tarbox Ramblers fame), to support it.

The World Series trophy is safely housed on Yawkey way, the Duck Boats are filled with tourists again, and Jonathan Papelbon has (hopefully) danced his last jig. The question for the Red Sox is: what now? In another week it will be open season on free agents and the Red Sox have two prominent ones in Curt Schilling and Mike Lowell. There’s another guy out there who might draw a little interest. Maybe you’ve heard of him, A-Something or other.

This will be an interesting offseason for the Sox (aren’t they all?) but the tenor and tone will be different from the frenzy of recent years. The foundation is set and the kids are beginning to fall into place. The shortstop should return for the first time since Nomar was still king. It will be different, but it will be interesting.
