Deval Patrick Makes a Move

The first thing we thought when we heard that Dianne Wilkerson was the target of an undercover FBI investigation was, “Wow, she’s in real trouble now.” The second thing that crossed out minds was, “Somebody’s going to make a power play here and we don’t just mean Sonia Chang-Diaz.”

Well, hello there Deval Patrick.

Questions For. . . Kathryn Tappen

1225477772Boston Daily was deeply saddened when we learned earlier this week that NESN had tapped someone by the name of Cole Wright to be the new anchor of SportsDesk. As you may recall, we started the Please Tap Tappen petition to install the New Jersey native in the spot most recently held by Hazel Mae. Instead, we get a dude.

In order to keep us from storming the Watertown studios with pitchforks and torches, the network got us in touch with our beloved host to ask her why she didn’t want the gig full-time.

Faux Shock and Outrage

1225203864We love the Dianne Wilkerson story as much as the next news organization, but now that she’s suspended her campaign and will let us know the day after Election Day whether or not she’ll serve out the rest of her term, we need to say something.

Everybody knew for a long time that Wilkerson had some serious problems with keeping her ethical affairs in order. So why is everyone acting so surprised by this scandal?

The Hill and the Hall Week in Review

1225212630Each Friday, Paul McMorrow will take you inside the smoke-filled rooms and darkly-lit corridors of government to bring you the hottest and juiciest political tidbits. This Week: Scandal! Sleaze! Dirty money! It’s like Christmas Morning. Plus: A sad announcement.

It’s been a hell of a year for scandal on Beacon Hill. Jim Marzilli went on a sexy rampage, there’s a grand jury investigating the Speaker’s former campaign treasurer, and the House Majority Leader might not be far behind.

The man who’s opposing him for control of the House probably used his committee to buy support. When one Rep didn’t fall in line, she was told she might get “really hurt.” Another couldn’t get hurt—he wasn’t anywhere near the State House when he was voting on stuff. And to top it all off, Rep from Worcester has a crooked mortgage and a young girlfriend who works for some insurance lobbyists. (Allegedly, allegedly, allegedly.)

None of that matters anymore. Because now, we’ve got Dianne Wilkerson to kick around. (more…)

The Taxman Comes for Michael Cloud

1225465784No wonder the anti-tax advocates want to repeal the state income tax—they’re completely inept when it comes to handling their own funds. A little more than a week after the Committee for Small Government admitted it was “flat broke,” we learn committee member Michael Cloud is fighting with the IRS because—wait for it—he didn’t pay his federal taxes.

BWAH-HA-HA!

And Now For Something Marginally Different

We love the tried and true “hot or not” treatments used by Tiger Beat and other quality publications. New Kids on the Block reunion? Not. Now the Backstreet Boys are hot.

1225463439We could apply this same treatment to crooked politicians on Beacon Hill. Now that the image of Dianne Wilkerson stuffing $100 bills into her shirt is four days old, it’s time to turn our attention to the doomed politico du jour on Beacon Hill.

Why hello there, House majority leader John Rogers!

Boston Licensing Board: Drunk on Power?

1218048163One of the good things to come out of the Dianne Wilkerson investigation (aside from the limitless potential for Halloween costume fun) is the curtain being pulled back on the Boston Licensing Board. In the Wilkerson complaint, she allegedly said the Board does all its business with “smoke and mirrors.”

So it was only a matter of time before the Boston Licensing Board came under fire for its role in the scandal.

What’s News

Your condensed guide to today’s daily papers.

1225456009She’s telling you she’s not going: To the surprise of absolutely no one, Dianne Wilkerson rejected the Senate’s call for her resignation. [Globe]

They didn’t have to go far to report the story: The Boston Herald and Christian Science Monitor both received packages that had fake anthrax in them yesterday. [Herald]
