Californians love to brag about In-N-Out Burger, with its custom-ground meat and handcut fries. So tasty, they say, they can’t imagine living without it! Well, we can—because we have UBurger, now celebrating its first year, to meet our fast-food needs.

The Kenmore Square eatery’s industrial design—aluminum chairs, galvanized steel walls—sets the stage for a smarter-than-your-average-burger menu. Cutely named hamburgers (the Cowboy, the Yuppie) and chicken sandwiches come with a variety of toppings (we love the ketchup-based house dressing). Patties are juicy and flavorful, and yes, the beef is ground on-site. Likewise, fries and onion rings are made fresh and cooked in pure vegetable oil. (In honor of Uburger’s anniversary, fries are free on 10/8, with purchase of a burger and drink.) Add the thick frappes, and we’re quite happy leaving that other place to Left Coasters.
