Like any food lover, Chris Douglass, of Icarus fame, is always on the hunt for the perfect local restaurant. You know the kind: friendly, inexpensive, reliable, close to home. But he could never find that sort of place in his Dorchester neighborhood. So he opened one himself. The Ashmont Grill is a casual, warm, and uncommonly good restaurant you’ll be wishing were in your neighborhood, too. Exposed brick and high ceilings give it an airy feel, and the menu is full of dishes you crave: simple salads, thin-crusted pizzas, burgers, and wood-grilled meats, all priced well under $20. But the sides were the star of our meal. One bite and you’ll fall in love with specials including the mashed bourbon sweet potatoes, cheesy grits, and onion rings—the best we’ve had in Boston. Desserts, made by an in-house pastry chef, are also a guaranteed treat.
