Insider Tip:
If you go for brunch at Centre Street, you’ll probably have to do some time on the sidewalk outside the café, which has just 30 seats and no waiting area. Dress for the weather (coat, umbrella, suntan lotion, whatever), and make sure you’ve got all your buddies in tow—you won’t make it past the front door without your entire party.

This pocket-size storefront on J.P.’s main street has a delicious split personality. Show up for dinner, and the café feels like a laid-back neighborhood find, offering creatively crafted epicurean fare (recent menu items include pasture-raised ribeye topped with maple-chipotle-bourbon butter and rare-sautéed yellowfin topped with a lemony avocado-caper salsa) in an intimate, art-filled space. Show up for the famous weekend brunch, and it’s a unapologetic mob scene—noisy, crowded, with the open kitchen going full-tilt to churn out eye-popping platters of pancakes, waffles, omelets, and other crowd-pleasers (check the specials menu for the perennially popular Cuban scramble). But at least one thing remains constant at Centre Street: an emphasis on ingredients that are locally grown, organic, and humanely raised.
