Croma, a Newbury Street playground for the see-and-be-seen crowd, excels at pizza basics—the simple but ethereal combinations of crispy crust, melted cheese, and tangy sauce. The 10-inch thin-crust pies are terrific snacks: The tried-and-true cinque formaggi (five cheeses) is a gooey delight, and what might have been a disjointed combination of Peking duck, hoisin sauce, cucumber strips, and fresh cilantro somehow comes together. With other dishes it’s hit or miss. Some, such as the baked portobello appetizer and the goat cheese salad drizzled in tomato vinaigrette, come through on flavor; others, such as the three-cheese lasagna, are just plain bland. The staff could use a bit more experience, but diners don’t seem to mind: They revel in the two-story dining room or sit outside on the patio, where they, too, can see and be seen. Note:Kitchen closes at 10 p.m. Mon.-Thu. and 11 p.m. Fri.-Sat.; late-night menu Thu.-Sat.
