The Overview
It takes finesse to make everybody feel truly welcome. But that’s what Garrett Harker (the “G” of B & G Oysters) has achieved at Eastern Standard, the stylish brasserie at the Commonwealth Hotel in Kenmore Square. For snobbish foodies, there’s the “Good Plate of Offal,” including a pâté made from headcheese, and a three-tiered shellfish platter. For sweaty Sox fans who pour in after a game, there’s the winning roast chicken and the (anything but) “Standard Burger,” topped with melted cheddar and served on butter brioche. For both types (and everyone in between), there’s the lively scene. The cavernous space, which easily could have wound up another soulless hotel restaurant, has been transformed into a turn-of-the-century Parisian bistro complete with marble bar, globe chandeliers, and soft, red leather banquets. Whether you’re ducking in for a quiet morning coffee or a late-night snack, you’ll feel right at home.
