Famous for sporting a Red Sox hat instead of a toque, Gordon Hamersley has a reputation for quality service as well as nationally renowned (and delicious) food. His eponymous bistro has been around since before the South End’s dining scene was chic, and still serves up the same comfort fare to a classy, if staid, clientele. Most nights the chef cruises the dining room to greet guests as they feast on his oft- (but deservedly) hyped roast chicken, hearty cassoulet filled with homemade sausages, and rich duck confit. A more casual neighborhood crowd gathers at the bar and adjoining café, which offer lighter fare and cozy seating.

My partner and I have enjoyed this restaurnat for the last 12 years and have gone there for many special occassions. However recently we had a pretty disappointed by the food and attitude. I ordered a chicken dish and it was coated in Cajun spices. When I asked why they were serving Cajun food in a French Provincial restaurant, I was dismissed with a comment that contemporary French chefs use spices from many different cultures... But the truth is, if I want Cajun I will go to a Cajun restaurant.

Comfortable, beautiful dining room- professional, charming staff- amazing, delicious food- It shouldn't exist in one restaurant but it does at Hamersley's. You WILL be transformed by the legendary roasted chicken.
