The Overview
The instant popularity of Jacky Robert’s Petit Robert Bistro is testament to just how hungry Bostonians are for moderately priced restaurants. Since it opened in 2005, Petit Robert has been packed with diners gobbling up such classics as pan-seared foie gras, roast chicken, and beef bourguignon—all priced at less than $20—and toasting the surprisingly affordable wine list. What you get at such bargain prices are solid, if imperfectly delivered, French classics. We loved the rich house-made pâté and garlicky escargot. And the instant classic, the burger dog—a hot dog–shaped burger on a baguette with lots of cheese—lures both Red Sox fans and the Back Bay elite. But the skirt steak was tough, chewy, and served—mon dieu!—without pommes frites. Still, the distinctly un-French (read: friendly) service makes up for a lot.
