Depending on the night, the Theater District’s Tantric can be a bustling confluence of hungry arts patrons or a mellow spot well suited to conversation. But no matter the crowd, the spices—cumin, tumeric, saffron, paprika, coriander—wafting from the kitchen hit you like a wall when you walk in. Perhaps due to Tantric's location (amid various chain restaurants), the menu makes mainstream concessions such as naan pizzas and kebab burritos; however, those looking for upscale takes on traditional southern and northern Indian recipes won’t be disappointed. Start with a flirty cocktail such as a Kama Sutra (cardamom-infused rum) or mango-clove martini before moving on to the pillowy naan. Although some vegetarian options fall flat on flavor, dishes such as the spicy goan shrimp curry almost make up for it. With attentive service and small touches, Tantric adds up to a spicy night out.
