Planted in a Southborough shopping plaza, Tomasso seems at first glance like a chain restaurant. Maybe it’s the overlit dining room, or the wine bar full of families waiting for tables. But one bite of chef Tony Bettencourt’s authentic Tuscan cuisine will melt your fears: Nothing about Tomasso tastes as though it comes from an assembly line. There are classic antipasti, homemade pastas, pizzas, and meat dishes that rival offerings from the most traditional of North End trattorias. From the glimmering open kitchen, Bettencourt sends out crispy arancini (fried risotto filled with fontina) and soft, delicate gnocchi served under earthy braised short ribs. A few dishes do suffer from oversaucing or, like the veal osso buco, just too much salt. Desserts, though, are terrific.
