Umbria’s unlikely location, in the middle of the Financial District, hasn’t stopped owners Frank De Pasquale and Marisa Iocco from creating a foodie destination. Named for the “green heart of Italy,” Umbria offers a warm, open kitchen with great respect for ingredients. Dishes are not rigidly focused on authenticity but take inspiration from the hearty appeal of the region’s food. Meat reigns in dishes including white polenta with crispy “veal bites,” the seared veal chop, and pasta dishes such as basil fettucelle in amatriciana sauce (a classic of pancetta, onions and red pepper). But vegetarians aren’t overlooked either. (We love the wild mushroom pie with caramelized Gorgonzola.) Iocco makes her own pasta in an old machine that turns out surprisingly fresh noodles. The bread, also made in house, has an Italian lightness and real flavor.
