Hearty Italian staples like eggplant parm and cannolis are conspiciously absent at Volle Nolle, the brainchild of Olives alum Torri Rae Crowell and neighborhood native Armando Galvao. This sandwich shop has European flair, complete with a tin ceiling, sepia-toned photographs, and fresh flowers, and the menu is to-the-point: a handful of salads and gorgeously pressed sandwiches. The Cuban serves up braised pulled pork; the smoked salmon is accented with lemon-caper mayonnaise (not cream cheese), cucumbers, and red onion; and the grilled cheese—Swiss melted between Black Forest smoked ham, caramelized onions, and frisee—is nothing like the classic. Each is topped off with two tiny gherkins, except, of course, for the pressed Nutella and banana on buttery brioche. Which is perfect just as it is.
