Zon's
This Jamaica Plain hideaway has a flair for transforming humble into haute. Occupying an otherwise undistinguished space (no glittering bank of windows, no marquee) on a side street, Zon’s has swanked up its cavelike interior with bordello-red walls against an ebony pressed-tin ceiling, sumptuous velvet touches, and a mix of track and candle lighting that exudes romance. The menu likewise makes the everyday into an event, whether it’s a burger of chopped sirloin and Stilton, or mac and cheese reimagined as farfalle in creamy farmhouse cheddar and fontina. (Of course, you’ve got to be ready to pay $16 for a plate of meatloaf, folks.) Though it lacks a full liquor license, Zon’s makes do with a cordials license which, thanks to creative bartending, results in buzzy cocktail offerings like the Charlie Chaplin (sloe gin, apricot brandy, and lime juice) and the Pluto (vanilla vodka, crème de cacao, and Baileys). Reservations are accepted for parties of 5 or more; smaller parties are seated on a walk-in basis.
