First Look at Marimekko on Newbury

The Finnish design company's second Massachusetts store opens tomorrow.

Newbury Street is looking a lot more colorful these days, thanks to the new 3,200-square-foot Marimekko opening at number 140 tomorrow. (It will be the Finnish company’s third store in the U.S., and the second in Massachusetts — the other local outpost is in Cambridge’s Huron Village, of course.)

Marimekko took over the circa-1880s brownstone, formerly home to United Colors of Benetton, and will offer two-and-a-half-floors of bold home accents, bed and bath products, fabric, and clothing.

Lynn Shanahan, the president of Marimekko in North America, says the company chose the space for its architectural integrity, and stripped out the fittings, drywall, and any additions put in by the previous tenant.

Newbury was a no-brainer. “Marimekko really has its heart and soul in America in Boston,” Shanahan said in a phone interview last week, referring to Ben Thompson’s iconic Harvard Square shop Design Research, which debuted the company’s printed textiles stateside in the late 1950s.

There’s a week’s worth of opening events, too — including a visit from Marimekko designer Aino-Maija Metsola from noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow.
