Urban Dare: Boston, May 19
Utilizing strength that’s more mental than physical, competitors may be asked to hit a bull’s-eye with a bow and arrow on Boston Common, play a giant game of Scrabble in Christopher Columbus Park, or climb the steps of the Bunker Hill Monument. This race is for those who like an easier, team-oriented challenge. Dropout rate: five percent. $90 (for a team of two), urbandare.com.

Tough Mudder: Mount Snow, VT, May 5 to 6; July 14 to 15
With a course designed by British Special Forces, this 10-plus-mile event features 28 military-style obstacles — and takes up most of the day. Dropout rate: 22 percent. $200, toughmudder.com.

Untamed New England: The Forks, ME, June 19 to 24
For the hardcore (or deranged), there’s this four-day, 200-mile race in which participants bike, paddle, run, and climb through Maine’s deep wilderness with little more than a compass. Dropout rate: 25 percent. $3,000 (for a team of four), untamedne.com. Steve Holt
