Is There Anything Botox Can’t Do?

Plus: A new IUD last three years rather than five, and more health news.

Botox is now approved for a number of new things that are not wrinkle-related. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Botox, made by Allergan, has been approved to treat adults with overactive bladders who cannot tolerate or were not helped by other drugs. Botox injected into the bladder muscle causes the bladder to relax, and increases its storage capacity. We recently reported that Botox is also being used to treat depression. There’s a new intrauterine device (IUD) that is 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, according to statement released last week by the parent company Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The FDA approved Skyla, a smaller IUD with a lower dose of hormones, that is effective for three years, rather than five years like other devices. This makes it ideal for women that haven’t had babies yet or newlyweds that may want to wait a few years, but not a full five. [Women’s Health]

People that are 80 years old and older that fall and break a hip have a 50 percent chance of never returning home. According to the Cleveland Clinic, winter is the worst time for falls, with slippery sidewalks and icy roads to lbalme. A fall that bruises a 20-year-old could kill an 80-year-old. According to the New York Times, hospitals in Boston were the first to start asking visitors with signs of illness to wear masks and avoid certain wards. [New York Times]
