Paul Pierce is the Celtics captain, a 10 time All-Star, and arguably has the best shot fake in the game. But off the court, his passion is trying to end childhood obesity through his charity, Truth on Health. The Truth on Health campaign was established by Pierce to help empower and encourage young people to lead healthier lifestyles. He encourages kids to be active, eat healthy, and make a commitment to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. In 2007, Pierce established the Paul Pierce Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children.

According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years, and the percentage of children ages six to 11 years old in the U.S. who were obese increased from seven percent in 1980 to nearly 18 percent in 2010. Those are scary numbers considering obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and pre-diabetes.

Pierce held the fourth annual “The Truth Strikes Again” celebrity bowling tournament Thursday night at Kings in Dedham. Head Coach Doc Rivers and many of his Celtics teammates, including Kevin Garnett (in a scarf, of course) joined Pierce in raising money for his charity. Pierce also live Tweeted the event.
