Men’s Health magazine named the “Best Cancer Hospitals in the U.S.” and no surprise here, two of Boston’s hospitals were named top in the region. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute took top honors for their work. Here’s why they awarded the honor to MGH:

With a complete range of patient care and services, it also has an extensive research base with nearly two-dozen specialty programs. One recent bone marrow study found promising results from Denosumab—a treatment designed to alleviate spinal bone loss—in men receiving prostate cancer treatment.

Also on the list of the best cancer hospitals is Dana-Farber. If you’ve been to Fenway Park for a game over the past 60 years, you’ve heard of the hospital. The Jimmy Fund, whose 60-year partnership with the Red Sox is highlighted through signage and fundraising events throughout the season, solely supports the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The funds raised go to adult and pediatric cancer care and research to improve the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world. Dana Farber has satellite centers around New England which helped determine why it should be called a “Best Cancer Hospital“.

Combined with Children’s Hospital Boston, Dana-Farber provides a full range of oncology care to adults and children. Newly opened satellite cancer centers throughout New England—and as far as away as New Hampshire—also mean you don’t always have to travel to the city for care.

According to the American Cancer Society, there will be more than 1.5 million new cancer diagnoses in 2013. And just this year more than half a million Americans may die from the disease.
