Boston Hospitals Recognized For Work With LGBT Community

Boston Medical Center (BMC), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber, Massachusetts General Hospital, Newton-Wellesley, Fenway Health, and many more health centers were recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2013 report. The annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, which is the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender organization, recognized 16 Massachusetts hospitals for their efforts.

The hospitals and medical facilites that were awarded the honor had to meet several requirements like a firm nondiscrimination policy for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of the same visitation rights for same-sex partners as opposite-sex partners, LGBT health education for key staff, and employment non-discrimination.

Boston Medical Center (BMC) was recognized for the second year in a row. “LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality,” says Shane Snowdon, health and aging director at BMC. “It makes a big difference to know that your local healthcare facility is fully committed to giving you the same care it gives your neighbors and co-workers.”

On the other side of things, four states had no “Leaders” and unfortunately our neighbor to the north, New Hampshire, was one them. The others were Idaho, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Seriously, New Hampshire? Not the best list to be on. Look at the company you’re keeping. (No offense to the Dakotas and Idaho, but come on.)
