Urgent care centers are the new trend in medicine. Once attached to a stigma of only being for the uninsured, these new “walk-in” clinics are taking up space in some of the Boston area’s toniest neighborhoods. Coming this summer, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is opening an advanced urgent care center on Route 9 across the street from the Chestnut Hill.

The massive 30,000 sq. ft. space will also offer orthopedic sports medicine, physical and occupational therapy, primary care practices, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, and a shared lab. The subspecialties available will be clinics in breast surgery, general surgery, hand surgery, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonary (including sleep services), rheumatology, geriatrics, surgical oncology, and integrative care.

“We’re looking forward to providing our patients with easy access to these important services,” said Dr. Kevin Tabb, BIDMC’s President and CEO in a press release. “Having comprehensive medical services in a brand new building with state-of-the-art systems and ample free parking at a convenient Route 9 location – in essence an extension of the Longwood Medical corridor – provides us with an enormous opportunity to better serve our patients.”

The Chestnut Hill Urgent Care center will be open 12 hours a day, seven days a week, with a capacity of up to 12 exam rooms. Unlike many other urgent care facilities, every patient will be treated by a physician certified in emergency medicine.

According to the press release:

Urgent care centers treat injuries or illnesses that need immediate attention, but are not serious enough to require an emergency room visit. The new Chestnut Hill urgent care center will be able to treat more advanced medical problems because it will be staffed by BIDMC emergency department physicians and nurses skilled in treating higher acuity illnesses and backed by advanced diagnostic tools such as CT scanners not available at many traditional centers.

“This is another example of providing the right care in the right place at the right time,” said Jayne Carvelli Sheehan, BIDMC’s senior vice president of ambulatory and emergency services in a press release. “In our Advanced Urgent Care Center, we expect that patients will experience shorter waiting times and lower co-payments compared to traditional emergency departments, while still receiving the same high quality care they expect from us.”
