Late Season Influenza Cases On the Rise

Or so we thought. It’s spring fever in the city, until you receive a health advisory from the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) that says the flu is still going around, and in the worst way possible.
“We realize that it’s late in the season, but the flu is unpredictable and people should take the appropriate precautions to stay healthy,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, executive director of BPHC. “Although the weather is getting warm, we’re seeing a second wave of influenza activity in Boston.”
The BPHC has tracked a rise in flu activity over the past several weeks, and health officials are encouraging residents to continue taking the basic precautions necessary in order to avoid becoming ill or spreading sickness. “There were 116 newly reported cases of flu in Boston between March 30 and April 5, bringing this season’s total volume of cases among residents to 1,237 as of last week,” the report says. More than 25 percent of cases have resulted in hospitalization, and there have been 11 deaths.
