Bluemercury, a spa-makeup-skincare hybrid shop, is opening its fifth Boston-area location (and its 50th in the U.S.) in early June in Chestnut Hill at 33 Boylston Street in The Street plaza off of Boylston Street.

Bluemercury is already known for its personal attention and generously-sized samples. The Newbury Street location is a pleasure to shop in because it appeals to adults. There’s no blasting music or teenagers playing with glitter. You also won’t have to elbow your way to the checkout counter like at some other makeup stores. The shop stocks its shelves with 90 brands, many of which you can’t find at the larger makeup stores, such as Mario Badescu and Bobbi Brown.

Spa treatments at the new location will include the signature oxygen facials, glycolic peels, waxing, and microdermabrasion. The store will also carry Bluemercury’s exclusive skincare line, M-61, which is a performance-based, paraben-free line created by CEO Marla Malcolm Beck in 2012. Reps for Bluemercury say that the line is the world’s first highly-technical and natural cosmeceutical brand.

“For our team, it’s about utilizing the latest technological achievements and combining this knowledge with a level of customer service that is rarely seen in this day and age,” Beck says. “We’re bringing back the old apothecary approach, where we know your name and give you the advice, time, and attentiveness that you deserve.”

Beck is no stranger to the Boston area. She graduated from Harvard Business School in 1998, and after growing tired of driving 30 miles to purchase her favorite lipstick, she developed the concept for Bluemercury in her final year of studies, right here in Cambridge.

“I wanted a place where I felt comfortable asking questions, where the staff could not just sell one line, but could advise me on the best products throughout the store,” Beck says.

The first location was opened in 1999 in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The brand will celebrate its 15th anniversary this September. Reps for the brand say that they will open another 10 locations in the U.S. in 2014, bringing the total number of shops to 60 throughout the country.
