Hike Here…Then Eat Here

Hidden Boston’s Marc Hurwitz is also an Appalachian Mountain Club group leader who seeks out treks not just for their views, but also for their proximity to choice eats. Here, he offers three of his favorite hike-nosh pairings.

Hike Here:

Lincoln Conservation Land

Hurwitz suggests hiking through the meadows and looping around Flint’s Pond. Then journey up into the highlands by the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum for “overlooks and bucolic fields.”

Then Eat Here:

Country Pizza

Hidden inside an auto garage near Lincoln Depot, this spot serves up New London–style pizza, “which is a bit like a mix of Greek pizza and bar pizza,” Hurwitz says. 161 Lincoln Rd., Lincoln, 781-259-4480, dohertysgarage.com.

Hike Here:

Blue Hills

At sunset, start at Houghton’s Pond and climb up Hemenway Hill, then cross over to Hancock Hill before heading back. The former offers two ledges with pastoral views. The latter, Hurwitz says, has a few side trails that get you some of the finest vistas of the city’s skyline and the ocean.

Then Eat Here:

Hillside Pub

Tucked behind a gas station, Hurwitz says this place has “good pub grub, including a decadent Irish pizza”—made with bacon or ham, scallions, and potato. 2 Royall Ave., Canton, 781-828-7778, hillsidepub.com.

Hike Here:

Middlesex Fells

Hurwitz recommends the Rock Circuit Trail, which “is steep and difficult in places, though some stretches of it can be skirted by easier trails that parallel it,” he says. You’ll get incredible views from Melrose Rock, Black Rock, Pinnacle Rock, and Boojum Rock. A peaceful loop trail around the High Service Reservoir leads to plenty of places to unpack a picnic.

Then Eat Here:

Pearl Street Station Restaurant

This old-school, family-friendly restaurant has a pizza window in the front, a bustling bar area, and a quieter set of rooms in the back for dining. “The steak tips, wings, pizza, and calzones are all excellent here, as well as the Italian sausage,” Hurwitz says. 53 Summer St., Malden, 781-322-6410, pearlstreetrestaurant.com.
