Rhode Island Man Calls Wearing Yoga Pants in Public ‘Bizarre’ and ‘Disturbing’

An anti-yoga pants letter is causing quite a stir in Barrington, Rhode Island.

If you’ve ever felt the soft embrace of a spandex-lycra blend upon your legs, chances are good you’re not going to like a letter published in Rhode Island’s Barrington Times.

Reader Alan Sorrentino submitted a letter to the editor railing against adult women wearing yoga pants outside the studio, and it’s exactly as bad as it sounds.

Sorrentino, wordsmith that he is, wrote that leggings are “adorable on children and young women who have the benefit of nature’s blessing of youth. However, on mature, adult women there is something bizarre and disturbing about the appearance they make in public.” Other gems include calling yoga pants “stinky” and “the absolute worst thing to ever happen in women [sic] fashion,” and likening their public appearance to men donning Speedos at the supermarket— “yuck!”

Unsurprisingly, the letter was not met with warm, fuzzy feelings. And unfortunately for Sorrentino, his address was printed alongside his diatribe.

Taking advantage of that fact is a woman who goes by Jamie Patrice on Facebook. She’s organized a “Yoga Pants Parade” in peaceful protest, inviting spandex proponents to sport their comfiest leggings and sashay past Sorrentino’s house on Sunday. So far, 232 people have submitted RSVPs on Facebook, and another 1,200 have been invited. The event has also been covered by media outlets nationwide.

Patrice also posted Sorrentino’s entire letter on Facebook. Read it here if you’re so inclined—then plan a Sunday day trip to Rhode Island.
