On a recent Saturday morning, the Somerville Winter Farmers Market was in full swing with live music, the smell of freshly baked bread, hot coffee, and best of all, freshly-picked produce. It’s a pleasant reminder that although we’re in the dead of winter, there is still fresh, locally-grown produce available. Winter farmers markets are cropping up all over the city and offer a variety of New England seasonal produce.

Winter produce in New England varies. Root vegetables like beets, parsnips, and carrots often taste the best this time of year. You can still enjoy apples through May, and winter squash and sweet potatoes are in-season through April. Mushrooms, onions, and sprouts are harvested in January, while garlic and leeks will stick around through February.
