Legendary Marathoner Bill Rodgers Running with Free Local Group
Rodgers will help lead a fun run through the Back Bay.
If you’re out jogging in the Back Bay Tuesday evening, keep your head up. You just may pass a legend.
Four-time Boston Marathon winner and author of the book Marathon Man, Bill Rodgers, will be leading City Sports’ weekly run club through the Back Bay. The run leaves City Sports’ Boylston Street location at 6:15 p.m. Rodgers will also be hosting a Q&A just before the run. He’s here to promote next month’s Allstate Life Insurance Boston 13.1 Marathon which benefits the One Fund.
The 65-year-old still runs 40-miles a week and even though Rodgers no longer actively runs marathons, he will be running in Boston in 2014. The Boxborough resident says that his favorite places to run are on the trails in his town, along the Charles River, or around Jamaica Pond.
He told us in June that he’s excited for the half marathon, because his old running nemesis will also be in the event. “Of course, my old arch rival Frank Shorter is running,” he says, “so I have a chance to maybe beat Frank again.”
Rodgers has won a marathon on five continents, and he’s won the New York Marathon four times. But his favorite is still Boston. “The Boston Marathon was my big win in 1975. When I won Boston in ’75, my life changed,” he says.
For more information on Bill Rodgers, his legendary career, and why he says athletes are better today then then were decades ago, check out our Q&A with him from June. To meet him in person, be at City Sports on Boylston at 5:45 p.m.
