Sun Life Financial Inc. donated $100,000 to the YMCA of Greater Boston Thursday at a special community event where the goal was to raise awareness of the critical risk factors associated with diabetes. Celtics Forward Brandon Bass, Assistant Coach Walter McCarty, Jenny Johnson of NESN’s new show, “Dining Playbook,” and Chef Ming Tsai were on-hand to participate in the event through cooking demos and showing off some serious basketball skills.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program aims to provide participants with the tools, resources, and information they need to reduce diabetes risk factors.

The event featured a physical activity session and a cooking demonstration where Chef Tsai showed his healthy take on “fried” rice and a fruit kebob made with a low-calorie yogurt dip. He also explained how he follows healthy practices at his own restaurants, Blue Ginger in Wellesley and Blue Dragon in Fort Point.

The event also featured a free diabetes risk assessment. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a lifestyle modification program that helps people reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by helping them learn about eating healthier, increasing physical activity, and other behavior changes. The program is part of the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program.

At the basketball clinic, Bass and McCarty demonstrated basketball drills and other athletic activities such as jumping rope.
