It’s generally agreed upon that walking 10,000 steps per day is the benchmark of an active lifestyle. In this series, we map some of our favorite 10,000 step walks throughout Boston and beyond.
Now that summer appears to be upon us for good, there’s nothing better than being out by the water. And fortunately, Boston has water all around. Rather than lying on a beach towel all day, soak in some waterfront views while getting in your daily steps. Here, we highlight three 10,000 step walks around some of Boston’s prettiest bodies of water:
If you’re looking for an escape from city life, Jamaica Plain is the place to go. With Jamaica Pond and the Arnold Arboretum as neighbors, it’s a great place to go for a nature-filled stroll. Take the T to the Forest Hills, then cut through the Arboretum to Centre Street, and continue along the Arborway until you reach Jamaica Pond. From there, walk around the pond, head to Boylston Street via Centre, and take the Green Street T home.
Everybody’s favorite running destination is also a great place to get your steps in. Start your journey at the Boston University West stop, cross the Boston University bridge, and follow the Esplanade until you reach the Longfellow Bridge. Cross the bridge and take Charles Street until you reach the Common. Walk along the perimeter, then take State Street to the Aquarium stop.
Chestnut Hill Reservoir
This Boston College favorite is definitely worth the trip out of Boston Proper. After getting off the T at Coolidge Corner, follow Beacon Street until you reach the Reservoir. Do a lap around the water, then take Commonwealth Avenue all the way up to the T at the Warren Street stop.
