Recipe: Baked Apple Cider Doughnuts
Make the fall favorite healthier with whole grains and natural sugars.
You may have already made your annual orchard pilgrimage, but that’s no reason to forgo apple cider doughnuts until next fall. With this baked apple cider doughnut recipe, you can make the fall favorite at home—and indulge without guilt.
Baked doughnuts taste just as good as fried doughnuts, but require way less work. (They’re also way better for you.) These doughnuts are also vegan, whole wheat, and low-sugar. You will need a doughnut pan to make them, but they can be found at any cooking store, or online.
Makes 6 doughnuts
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice
1/2 cup applesauce
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 Tbsp coconut oil
1/2 tsp vanilla
Sugar and extra cinnamon for topping, if desired
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir well.
Coat the doughnut pan with nonstick cooking spray. Spoon the batter into the doughnut molds. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
If desired, mix sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle on top of the doughnuts. Serve warm, with a cup of coffee at the ready.
