Outside the Boxx

A pair of local designers forge a surprisingly natural fit out of crisp lines and timeless fabrics.

From top, SoWa double-sided bench, $2,600; Dana coffee table, $2,700; Boxx bench, $2,200.

Boxx Furniture co-owners Phillip Winston and Jose Pascual upholster their modern pieces with rich mohair and soft wool fabrics for an unexpectedly plush experience.

Perhaps such sensitivity to how things feel comes from Winston’s background in social work—or maybe it’s driven by Pascual’s Latin American roots. Either way, their South End retail space, On the Side, features several museum-worthy iconic pieces (including the SoWa bench, named after Boston’s hippest neighborhood).

Winston and Pascual do custom work, as well. We love their one-off aluminum outdoor furniture, and planters made of brightly painted cold-rolled steel.
