Super Tuesday

1202224952Ok, fine. I admit it. I jumped the gun last week. There’s next to no chance that Mitt Romney will lose Massachusetts. The latest polls have the man up 20 points. And even though the campaign season has been screwy so far, it’s unlikely Arizona Sen. John McCain can close such a huge gap in the Bay State.

That doesn’t mean today will lack drama in Massachusetts, though. Heading into Super Tuesday, the Democratic primary here is too close to call.

Either way, and despite the weather, make sure you get out and vote, people. (If you’re not sure where your polling place is, find out here.)

Back to the horse race. A new Suffolk University poll released yesterday shows Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in a tight contest with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton. According to the poll, Obama leads Clinton in Massachusetts, 46 percent to 44. That’s a hell of an accomplishment for Obama considering that Massachusetts has long had a love affair with the Clintons. The fact that Obama even forced Clinton to campaign here in recent weeks speaks volumes about how the dynamic is shifting.

The same thing is happening out on the Left Coast. California has always been Clinton country, and it looked like Hillary would walk away with the state, and the majority of its delegates. At least it looked that way a few months ago. Last week, Obama somehow managed to get within the margin of error in the Golden State. Today, according to the newest Rasmussen poll, Obama has a one point lead there.

Still, despite the progress Obama has made, neither the Obama or Clinton campaigns think the Democratic primary will be over after Super Tuesday. In fact, both camps are making plans for a long(er) battle. Fine by me. There’s nothing we love more at Boston Daily than a good fight.

The GOP race is another matter entirely. While Romney figures to carry his “home” state, he’s apparently in trouble elsewhere. So while the Dems look like they’ll be smacking each other around for some time, the Republicans could have it all but wrapped up by the time you get out of bed tomorrow. Which makes me sad, frankly. What the hell are we going to do when we don’t have Mitt Romney to kick around anymore? (Romney, of course, says he’ll keep campaigning no matter what, but it’s getting a little late in the game to truly believe that tired refrain.)

While we’re trying to figure out our next move, Boston Daily turns inward. Here are our picks for the Massachusetts primaries:
