Aly Raisman Wins Gold in Floor Exercise, Bronze in Beam. Needham’s Aly Raisman won a bronze medal in the individual balance beam competition this morning, which leaves her one more shot at winning gold. Her final performance will be in the floor exercise competition, slated for 11:23 a.m. today. Results to come. [CBS] UPDATE, 12:28 p.m.: Raisman won the gold in the floor exercise just an hour after winning the bronze. It’s the first Olympic gold in the floor exercise for a U.S. woman, and it means Raisman is coming home with two gold medals. Not too shabby. [ESPN]
Bobby Valentine is Here to Stay (Sort of). Despite the shaky season the Red Sox have had (they’re currently nine games behind the first-place Yankees), team ownership expressed full support for manager Bobby Valentine. “We are not making a change in manager,” John Henry wrote in an email to reporters, after general manager Ben Cherington also voiced his backing. Though Cherington isn’t blaming Valentine for the team’s lackluster performance, he also wouldn’t confirm whether Valentine will see his two-year contract carried out. [ESPN]

MIT Students Scam Lottery, Laugh All the Way to the Bank. During research for a project several years ago, a group of MIT students figured out how to conquer the Massachusetts’ Cash WinFall, calculating that it was the most reliably lucrative lottery game. And it paid off—literally. By 2005, they had raked in $8 million, and by 2010, they discovered how to win the entire jackpot in one drawing. Because their actions were not illegal—nor were those of the lottery officials who knew of the students’ scheme—the only consequence was State Treasurer Steven Grossman’s shutdown of Cash WinFall. Facebook Group to MBTA: ‘Let Your People Go.’ A new Facebook group has popped up in protest of the MBTA Green Line’s closed-door policy. Too Many Sharks, Not Enough Signs. Despite the recent increase in shark sightings along the Cape, many area beaches have not posted signs warning visitors of danger.
