Bob Kraft On Tom Brady’s New Contract

Plus: Canadiens topple Bruins, and more from the weekend in sports.

Here’s what you may have missed from the weekend in sports:

Hockey! On Sunday night, the Bruins fell to the rival Canadiens, 4-3. Like most Boston-Montreal games, there was no love lost. Afterward, Bruins coach Claude Julien accused the visitors of embellishment. In other words, he called them a bunch of fakers. “This is embarrassing for our game, the embellishing. Right now, they’ve got over 100 power plays so far. It’s pretty obvious why. We’re trying to clean that out of our game. It’s got to be done soon.” [Globe]

MIT alum’s NFL dream ends (for now). Lauren Silberman, the 28-year-old former MIT grad student whose goal was to become the NFL’s first female place kicker, struggled at a regional combine in New York. During the tryout, she injured her right leg and only attempted a few kicks. Said Silberman: “I would certainly be very, very excited and happy if I had the opportunity to try again, but it’s not up to me. It’s up to the scouts.” [AP]

Kraft weighs in on Brady’s deal. Patriots owner Bob Kraft tells Peter King that Tom Brady’s new contract extension isn’t a typically bogus NFL deal. “No, no, no. This is a real deal. Look at our track record. We don’t do fake deals. The contract we have with Tom Brady is a real contract we will both live by. …  I was just trying to stay ahead of the curve. If we were going to have to pay him elite-quarterback money and have elite-quarterback cap numbers, I just didn’t think we would be able to build a team. We don’t want to have a team where we’re paying 18 to 20 percent to a player on the cap. I wanted to do something elegant that would work for everybody. I had been talking to him off and on for maybe 18 months, about how I wanted him to finish his career here, and about how we both have to be smart about it. I just really want him to end his career a Patriot.” [Sports Illustrated]

BC wins one for DK. The struggling Boston College men’s basketball team pulled off a 53-52 comeback win over Virginia on Sunday. It was a fitting tribute to longtime BC sports information director Dick Kelley, who has been battling ALS. He was honored before the game. For more on Kelley’s story: [Eagle-Tribune]

Zoltan Mesko is enjoying his offseason. The Patriots punter seems to have a lot of time on his hands. That, I think, explains why he recently tweeted a picture of himself in a Speedo while holding two Chihuahuas. [Deadspin via Spin It]
