Boston Charity, By the Numbers

A peek at who’s shelling out the big bucks.

Stroll down any major thoroughfare in this town, and you’ll pass landmarks sporting the names of some of the nation’s most famous philanthropists—from the Mugar Memorial Library to the Charles Hayden Planetarium. Today, our long-standing tradition of charitable giving lives on through the likes of big-dollar donors such as the Krafts, the Johnsons, and the Hostetters. While the Bible Belt may have a stronger emphasis on faith-based charity, our movers and shakers are still happy to give till it hurts. This month, as we head into the spring gala season, we pay tribute to the folks who make sure there’s always a pot of gold at the end of the 501(c)(3) rainbow.
