The First Nonstop Flights to South America Are Coming to Logan

Starting soon, you can go direct from Boston to Bogotá, Colombia.

Want to fly to South America without suffering the unique misery that is a multi-hour layover in some godforsaken city (i.e., Miami) on your way there? Starting this summer, you’ll be able to do just that.

In June, the Colombian airline Avianca will begin direct flights to Bogota, Colombia, the Boston Globe reports. The flights will run four times per week and the route will connect to other South American cities.

The Baker administration expects the move will help Boston’s economy, which is why Avianca will receive $400,400 over two years from the state under Massport’s international incentive program, which helps connect Boston with other markets. The funds aid in marketing expenses and costs associated with landing. Under the program, Massport has given more than $11 million to 11 airlines since 2012, and officials say Boston-area businesses like Dunkin’ Brands and Raytheon will take advantage of the new flights to Colombia. Logan has managed to double its number of nonstop international flights over the last decade.

This is all good news for Boston businesses and anyone who wants to visit the second most biodiverse country in the world—or the rest of South America.
