MIT Students Scam Lottery, Laugh All the Way to the Bank

By Tom Vellner | Boston Daily |

During research for a project several years ago, a group of MIT students figured out how to conquer the Massachusetts’ Cash WinFall, calculating that it was the most reliably lucrative lottery game. And it paid off—literally. By 2005, they had raked in $8 million, and by 2010, they discovered how to win the entire jackpot in one drawing. Because their actions were not illegal—nor were those of the lottery officials who knew of the students’ scheme—the only consequence was State Treasurer Steven Grossman’s shutdown of Cash WinFall. Do we smell a sequel to 21? [TIME]
