Scott Brown Changes His Mind on an Assault Weapon Ban

Just in time for a special election?

By | Boston Daily |

Senator Scott Brown reversed his position on a federal assault weapons ban today in the wake of the shooting at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school … which sounds to a lot of people like a shift one might take if one were, oh we don’t know, trying to appeal to the Massachusetts electorate in a hypothetical upcoming special election.

In an interview with the Springfield Republican, he said:

“What happened in Newtown where those children were subject to that level of violence is beyond my comprehension. As a state legislator in Massachusetts I supported an assault weapons ban thinking other states would follow suit. But unfortunately, they have not and innocent people are being killed,” Brown said. “As a result, I support a federal assault weapons ban, perhaps like the legislation we have in Massachusetts.

In the wake of the shooting in a movie theater at Aurora, Colorado, he and Elizabeth Warren differed on a federal ban. She supported it, and he thought it ought to be left to the states. (He had an “A” rating from the NRA, while Warren, like the entirety of the Massachusetts congressional delegation, has an “F.”)

Brown is a lame duck so his change of heart could come from a genuine shift in feeling spurred by the horror of last week’s shooting, but of course that’s not how political punditry thinks, so many people are assuming that Brown is continuing to position himself for a potential special election should Senator Kerry step aside to serve as Secretary of State. (Which is pretty much guaranteed at this point.) Roll Call’s David Drucker notes:

Oh, politics.

What if those teachers had assault weapons how would that outcome look a lot less kids dying. It’s just coming to one step closer for the government to disarming us think law abiding citizens and wake up.

    • fred

      Your a complete idiot.

      • Jeff

        Well said!

      • B.l.o

Actually he’s right. This shooting was staged. Just like the Batman shooting and 9/11. So u would be the idiot. Open your eyes.

No, not a lot fewer kids dying, but more caught in the crossfire. Do you remember in new York city last year how many innocent bystanders were shot by trained policeman firing at a gunman? You think teachers will do better? While they are firing, who will be moving the children to dessert

No, not a lot fewer kids dying, but more caught in the crossfire. Do you remember in new York city last year how many innocent bystanders were shot by trained policeman firing at a gunman? You think teachers will do better? While they are firing, who will be moving the children to safety? Who is liable if a student steals a teachers gun? Does a teacher have a right to refuse to carry a gun? Will you pay them double since you expect then to also be policemen? And people complain about the quality of teachers now; it can only get much worse.Suisse

will be moving the children to dessert

A teacher did have an assault weapon & her son took it to school. Thk b4 u type dummy

As a little boy, I couldn’t wait for the teacher to be out of the room a minute so I could steal her assult weapon. Locks can be picked or broken, combinations learned. If he tries evey day, one day she’ll forget to lock it. Can’t keep a kid out of your gun, they’ll find a way.

And when some psycho breaks in with their assault weapon, is that when the teacher unlocks theirs? And no money for education, but lets buy every teacher in America an assault rifle…brilliant.

Teachers should not have to provide security. That is the job of the police. Why wait for them to show up after the fact. Have an officer armed with an AR-15 at every school. You would not ask a teacher to patrol the streets fighting crime why ask that of them at school? The police are trained in shoot-don’t-shoot anyway. Most teachers would not want to be armed. Even in a fantasy world without guns a nutjob will still try to kill with anything that will produce mass casualties and last time I checked bombs are illegal and there are oh so many ways to make one plus thanks to the internet the instructions are readily available too. Also, when all of the legal guns are rounded up how are the gun collecting officials going to get the criminals to hand theirs over too? And stop more from coming into the country across the border to feed the black market? We can’t even stop drugs from coming into the country so how will illegal guns be stopped? The answer is they will never be. Just like drugs. When the US is disarmed sleep well knowing that the criminals have won with a helping hand from politics. Also think of all of the unregistered assault weapons and stockpiles of high capacity magazines for them the government does not know the whereabouts of. Thanks to the government there are a few more out there(need for speed). Just ask Mexico. They will not just disappear on their own. To disarm the law abiding citizen in the hope of peace is wishful thinking at its worst. It just will never happen. Prohibition did not work for alcohol due to a black market for it and will not for guns for the same reason. Criminals will always have guns. That is because they do not care about laws. They laugh about gun laws. That’s because they are criminals. To make them care you will have to either execute them for gun crimes or build bigger prisons, both of which will not happen. It’s cheaper to turn them loose to commit more crime.

Of course having 1 trained “gatekeeper” with a pistol or shotgun + cctv system would suffice.
What I’m wondering about is what happened to the 2 guys that were arrested and put in handcuffs immediately afterwards? 1 video showed numerous cops chasing a guy thru the woods and having him facedown in cuffs, and a 2nd video of a small boy w/crew cut describing police having a 2nd guy also facedown in cuffs by the gymnasium? And was there no camera on the front door? Wheres the video of the shooter crashing thru the door?
