The Hyde Park city councilor announced his candidacy Thursday.

Rob Consalvo, the District 5 city councilor from Hyde Park, announced his (non-shocking) candidacy for mayor of Boston Thursday. A press release quotes him saying:

I am running for Mayor because I love the City of Boston and I am prepared and ready to serve all of our neighborhoods. I have a proven record of innovation, leadership, compassion, and a strong commitment to public service.

A longtime friend and neighbor of Mayor Tom Menino, Consalvo was once rumored to be Menino’s pick for a successor. So far, Menino has said he’ll stay out of the race entirely, but it still makes Consalvo, “the obvious choice if Boston is looking for another hard-working Italian-American from¬†Hyde Park with underestimated political skills,” in the words of mayoral race handicapper David Bernstein. Of course, who knows if we are. In the meantime,¬†Consalvo joins an ever-more crowded field, with several candidates jumping in this week.
