A Roxbury woman was arraigned in court and charged with extortion for allegedly trying to con a man into paying for her breast enhancement surgery, in exchange for not filing a criminal complaint against him after his car brushed against her while walking.

According to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office, the victim, who is an attorney, says Deborah Yi texted him more than 10 times in two days indicating that she wanted roughly $7,000 in return for not reporting the incident to police. Yi told the victim she planned on using the money to get breast surgery, according to reports.

The victim said he was in the Seaport District on Sunday and accidentally brushed against Yi, who was walking, as he turned from Seaport Lane onto Congress Street. After the run-in, Yi allegedly said she was OK, and appeared uninjured, but the two exchanged contact information anyway. Less than an hour later, Yi allegedly began contacting the victim.

After receiving multiple messages and phone calls, the victim went to the State Police, who monitored the phone exchanges. On Tuesday, police set up a sting operation and had the victim agree to meet Yi and hand over $3,500 in cash in exchange for her silence. Wearing audio and video recording equipment, the victim met with Yi at Liberty Wharf, according to the report.

The victim handed Yi the envelope full of cash, at which time she allegedly demanded another $3,500 within a day or two before they parted ways. The report said State Police quickly arrested Yi, at which time she handed over the cash-filled envelope and allegedly made statements that she knew what she was doing was wrong, “but thought it was a way to get easy money.”

Yi will be back in court in July. A judge released the suspect on personal recognizance on the conditions she stay away from the victim.
