MBTA Officer Injured During Hunt For Bombing Suspects Will Wave Flag At Bruins Game
Transit Police Officer Dic Donohue will do the honor on the ice at TD Garden.
The MBTA Officer injured during a Watertown shootout with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects in April is going to be the featured Bruins fan banner captain at Wednesday’s game at TD Garden.
On a Facebook page dedicated to raising funds for MBTA Transit Police Officer Richard Donohue, the officer’s wife wrote that she was excited about her husband’s opportunity to be able to go out on the ice for game three of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“Dic has been asked to wave the flag for the Bruins Game 3, Wednesday night! It has been a long [six] weeks with a lot of ups and downs, and it is finally time for Dic to have some fun and get out of a hospital setting, even if for only one night,” Donohue’s wife wrote on the Facebook page. “I am so unbelievably proud of my husband and couldn’t be happier that he gets to show his true [Boston] pride! Sean, the first wave of that flag will be for you.”
Donohue, who sustained life-threatening injuries and has been recuperating at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, was close friends with MIT Officer Sean Collier, who was allegedly shot by the bombing suspects just days after the Marathon attacks, the same night Donohue took a bullet to the leg.
In May, Donohue addressed the public for the first time, through an update on the MBTA Transit Police blog, where he made jokes about his injuries, but said he was feeling positive about a full recovery. In his letter to the community, Donohue asked that the public respect his privacy as he continues to heal and spend time with his family during this difficult transition, however, he thanked people for their “outpouring of prayers and endless support,” and acknowledged the heroism that members of the Transit, Boston, Harvard, Watertown, Cambridge and State Police showed when coming to his aid in a time of crisis.
Investigators are trying to determine if Donohue’s injuries were sustained in friendly fire during the manhunt for the bombing suspects in Watertown on April 18.
Last month, bombing victim Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the attack on Boylston Street, did the honor of waving the flag on the ice during a Bruins game at TD Garden.
