Rolling Stone’s Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Issue Is Already Selling on Ebay for $20

The thing hasn’t even hit newsstands yet.

ebay

Just one day after the curtain was raised on the Rolling Stone cover featuring Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one day before it hit newsstands, there were several copies of the magazine selling on Ebay for around $20. Groan. The inevitable side-effect of investing several metric tons of rage into a physical object, as many of us did at the revelation of Rolling Stone‘s cover, is that to those who don’t share the rage, it becomes a collector’s item. Apparently those that got their hands on a copy before it went up for sale, either because they’re subscribers or by some other means, sought to cash in. One Texas based seller advertises the issue as “controversial,” “hot,” and “rare.” Amusingly, that seller’s description continues:

THIS COPY IS RARE AND ALMOST HARD TO FIND!
ORDERS WILL BE FILLED WHEN SHIPMENT ARRIVES AT THE END OF THE WEEK!
THIS ITME [sic] WILL SELL OUT FAST SO RESERVE YOURS NOW!

Oh, man, the phrase, “ALMOST HARD TO FIND.” Hahahahaha. Allow us to argue that if you pay $20 for something whose cover price is $4.99 because it is “almost hard to find” … you are unredeemable. One seller says they are, “sure it won’t stay on the newsstand for long.” Is that true? Sure, several stores said they wouldn’t sell the issue, but … most of them did not. We have to imagine that if you try hard, you can find a copy of a magazine that’s the subject of widespread boycotts for something less than a 400 percent markup.

Okay, perhaps there are those who live in the middle of nowhere with only a CVS to sell them magazines and who are desperate for a print copy of this issue. Perhaps they will put in a bid. And abroad, where copies are non-existent, and emotions are less raw, perhaps there are those who want a copy too, but then … several sellers appear only to ship  to the U.S. where, to the vast majority of us, this just seems a little silly and cravenly opportunistic.

I will never buy or read another Rolling Stone Magazine. Screw them – they are unpatriotic terrorists. Who is with me?????

    • brian199511

Time put Hitler on their cover as “Man of the Year”. First Amendment allows journalism to use bad judgement.

    • Garry Potts

Lets be honest. You couldn’t afford one anyway.

  • Phoebiann

There is “patriotic” talk by those who want to be offended, and then there is reality. Let’s see what happens, but I think the magazine will sell out quickly and become a collector’s item. I am offended by crime and injustice, but I take no offense at Rolling Stone or its cover. The cover goes along with a story that encourages that we THINK and understand how these things happen, and continue to happen.

    • Facebook User

You must be kidding. You think we should ‘try to understand’, and your ‘offended’. What a milquetoaste response to an outrageous act of terrorism. Bet youd feel different if it was you or some liberal a–hole you love that it happened to.

      • supriya g. DCIII

facebook user, you have spelled “you’re” wrong

      • Phoebiann

The Rolling Stone magazine cover or story are not acts of terrorism. I don’t see purpose in public outcry and stores refusing to sell the magazine, beyond making the magazine a desirable item. At least that’s how it worked on me, someone who is generally immune to marketing and not a magazine reader. I’ve seen Rolling Stone magazine many years in the past, and wouldn’t normally think of buying it or any other magazine. However, I am now bidding on eBay for a copy of this Tsarnaev issue. And in the bidding, and having already lost twice, I see I am not the only one trying to get a magazine that has not even hit the newsstands yet. So, offended people could have prevented this travesty perpetrated by Rolling Stone by taking care of personal business and avoiding drama, rather than making an issue out of how offended they are.

    Fuck Rolling Stone

Victory parade 1945 in Moscow. The captured Nazi banners are supposed to be put at the feet of the victors by the German prisoners of war, But how? With dignity?! NO. The banners, according to the military orders, were dumped on the ground unceremoniously. in the heap. End of the story. Never give murderers and rapists the opportunity to insult you second times!
Rolling Stones did…. Glamorizing murderer is insult to his victims, to their families, to the nation, and to the world.

  • Rich Duff

I don’t recall Rolling Stone putting a picture of the blind fanatical religious muslum leader that was responsible for the 1st bombing of the WTC on their cover! I will agree that this terrorist is handsome but a NUT just the same. Looks alone can sell news to the weak-minded public that are attracted to the outer beauty, while the monster that lies within is overlooked…

Isn’t it that all getting worked up for nothing? He is a bomber , and was known as a nice guy, and has good looks. These are contradictions we see in our day to day life. Its best that we see these contradictions as facts of life and learn from them, not shun them. There are lot more DTs around us lets understand and be alert, that could avoid at least one such tragedy. Not wanting to see these facts takes you nowhere.

  • PeterBelles

Give him the death penalty ASAP

  • Mark Miller

A rock star? The kid’s narcissism reminds me of the recently released photographs of Hitler practicing gestures for public speeches. Regardless of how or why Tsarnaev ended up where he is, he remains a killer — callow and clueless. His skimpy resume of positives was permanently erased by his complicity in four murders and scores of grievous injuries, many disabling. As for Rolling Stone’s cover, who cares? Magazines reflect the heights and depths of American culture, and physical beauty (along with youth, fame, and wealth) is among the false gods that most magazines worship with a peculiar fervor.

  • Average_American

    Hey, guess what dummies…
for $20 you can get 30 issues right from RS itself. Duh.

  • Yorel Trust

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Rolling Stone Cover or
the decision by the magazine to do a story on the Boston Bomber.
Freedon of the press is one of the things that make this Country
so Great. Why are a Few people trying so hard to cause us to be
Outraged over this “Non Issue”. There are a lot of things that we
should be outraged over but this is certainly not one of them.
Congress is Broken and should be Fixed, Be outraged .
The American Press is Just Fine. If Its Not Broken Don’t Fix it. Please.

    • Facebook User

Man, are you brain washed. If there is anything we should be outraged about, its the lame stream media, with thier heads up the loser in cheifs a–.

    • Tommy

Nothing wrong with the RS story. Glamorizing him by putting him on the cover is outrageous. Having your face on the cover of Rolling Stone is seen as having ‘made it’ as a musician or celebrity – that’s the significance. Are you really so dim as to need that pointed out? So you think it’d be just fine to put Hitler on the cover? How about Jeffery Dahmer? Doesn’t matter, right? Also, if he was an ugly bearded old man, never would have happened. Yes, plenty of bigger problems out there, but spending 5 minutes showing disdain for RS isn’t enough of a distraction to lessen any of that either. And yes, they can do it and they did, it’s the USA, but that doesn’t mean people can’t also be mad about it. They shouldn’t profiteer by using that kid’s face, unless they’re planning on donating all the sales of this issue to the people that were maimed or the families of the dead. Probably not going to happen.

  • gbacoder

this is just the press on both sides trying to make a story out of something that isn’t. we all know looks are not everything, anybody can look cool, what’s the big deal?

  • BarttheCat

What’s the big deal? They have a story on this guy and his brother, it’s a big story, so they have him on the cover. Plain and simple. Find something else to become enraged about.

  • Great Lakes

or you can go to the news stand and buy one for $5. #stupid

  • Facebook User

Word has it the publisher of rotten stone is an outrageous pediphile, and just has a crush on flash-bang. Cute, aint it?

  • J.Hartzog

If you don’t like what RS has done, the best way to show them is to NOT buy the magazine. That is the beauty of the free enterprise system. Is what they did “wrong?” Well… it isn’t illegal, But seems tasteless and insensitive toward those who were hurt or lost loved ones at the hands of the man pictured. I understand he is news. So… run the article with someone else on the cover. Just a thought.

  • July2013

I used to subscribe to Rolling Stone magazine when I was younger and it was a magazine about the MUSIC industry. It’s always had some articles with a certain slant to them, but I must say you really screwed up on this one. None of these bat-shit crazy bastards should get 10 seconds of publicity, much less the amount of air play the ravenous news media gives them. That’s at least in part why they do this- to get some attention because they are not even a blip on the cosmic map.

  • m r

    Supply and demand my friend.

If you think this is bad then you should see what they do on wallstreet and at our financial institutions.

  • myleftone

I’ve looked all over the area north of Boston. Nobody has it. This doesn’t exactly feel like America.

  • Toni

It is absolutely ok to buy the magazine. People who support the outcry seriously need to read the article or get to know the alleged bomber a little better through other channels. Dzhokhar is the biggest news happening in the world. Judging him without even knowing anything about him is just blind. I understand he probably committed the bombing, but he has all the rights as a US citizen and should get a fair trial. From the descriptions of people who actually know him he did seem to be an all-around golden boy that turned into this alleged bomber. Anyone would be curious to know.
