Vandals Allegedly Tampered With the ‘Try God’ Billboard Along the Mass Pike

The Catholic Radio station that put up the original sign said at least now they are getting some extra attention.

A large billboard along the Massachusetts Turnpike, advertising a Catholic radio station, was allegedly defaced by vandals last week, according to the manager of the talk show promoting their services.

Last Friday, listeners of 1060 AM WQOM Catholic Radio called the station management and reported that the black billboard that read “Try God,” and advertised the station’s AM dial, had its message altered to say “Try God. The other WHITE meat.”

Chris Kelley, who manages the Catholic Radio broadcast, said “it’s very sad” that someone would deface the “uplifting message” encouraging people to turn their radio dials to the station. “This is clearly not a circumstance of some teenagers with spray paint. Someone went to a lot of trouble to make it appear that the new text was a real billboard message,” Kelley said of the sign, which stands along I-90 in Brighton.

The “Try God” campaign is running in the Greater Boston area through September 22. The purpose of the campaign is to reach a broad cross-section of the Boston community, according to a statement from the radio station. There are 23 billboards up around Boston on major highways including 93 North in Medford, and 93 South in Dorchester.

Although troubling, Kelley tried to look at the bright side of the situation. “This act, however, is an indication that the ‘Try God’ billboard campaign is attracting attention and making people reflect on the role of God in our lives,” he said, spinning the act of vandalism into a positive message. “That attention is the silver-lining and a sign that the campaign already has been successful.”

Kelley admitted he didn’t understand what the alleged vandals were trying to convey by adding the words “The other WHITE meat” to the plain text on the sign, but Scot Landry, host of The Good Catholic Life radio program at the station said he would guess it is an act against people of faith. “This act of vandalism was certainly not a prank. It should cause us to reflect on the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that hostility is increasing against the practice of faith and against religious expression,” he said. “People of faith, including Catholics, contribute so much to the fabric of our society in the Boston-area, through social service organizations, hospitals, schools and in little acts of service in every community. The message of ‘Try God’ is a hopeful one as it invites everyone, in some way, to connect with a faith community and participate in building a civilization of love.”

There was no indication that any of the other signs along major highways were tampered with.

As of Monday morning, the billboard along the Massachusetts Turnpike had been fixed to reflect its original message.

The announcement about the vandalism on the Archdiocese of Boston’s official Facebook page elicited varying responses, including prayers for those who were behind the gag. Others, however, had a different message for the alleged pranksters: “Hope that person enjoys their little comedy skit while roasting marshmallows in hell,” one person wrote.

It’s so sad that in this day and age people here are still religious people. Sure, your Grandparent still go to church, but that’s because they don’t have a computer. Your parents still go occasionally, but only to remain semi-social in those circles. Everyone under the age of 40 is now hyperaware that churches have and always will be a hotbed of immorality, a place to justify cruelty, bigotry, and hatred, all while trying to strip away an individuals ability to think for themselves. And, for what it’s worth, that vandalism was pretty funny.

    • Chakolate

My first thought when I originally heard the slogan “Try God” was that I’d love to try him, if he existed, for his crimes against humanity.

But I would never, ever, vandalize someone else’s message. Post my own? Sure. Interfere with someone else’s freedom of expression? No way. I hope they catch whoever did this. As an atheist, I cherish my right of free speech too much to abridge it for someone else.

      Shame on you, vandals.

      • Wachinagi

While I agree with your sentiment, it could be looked upon as a tit-for-tat scenario. This is the Catholic Church we’re talking about here. I wonder…if you tried REALLY hard…would you MAYBE be able to find at least ONE time the Catholic Church interfered with or completely ignore someone else’s rights? I think I might be able to find…a few…

        • Chakolate

Tit for tat? Really? How Biblical!

Yes, the Catholic Church has a lot to answer for. Does that mean we get to/have to sink to their level? No thanks.

      • Greg Oropeza

You should have stopped at the trying God for his crimes against humanity analogy.
You had me there. As for the rest, it’s not as if they made it say “Fuck God” or something equally vulgar.
They were just having fun with an old advertising slogan added irrelevantly to the message. People are are reading way to much into this.

        • Chakolate

Just having fun destroying someone else’s property, and interfering with someone else’s free speech.

          • Greg Oropeza

How long do you think it would take if an Anti-God message board was up before it was defaced?
You and I know it would be immediate and harsh, without any attempt at cleverness.

Yea if only the liberals (aka Atheists) had done a better job in the schools of driving God out of the world.

Wow such hate from the “loving left.”

      • Greg Oropeza

Liberals do not own atheism (see Jimmy Carter).

    • Soka Sema

There is no such thign as having “bigotry” towards perverts.
      It’s not hate , it’s natural digust.

You dont’ need to be religious in anyone to see perverts for what they are.

  • Carmenalex

Are they so dense that they don’t get it? White meat…the portrayal of god and Jesus (especially Jesus) as Lilly white with nice straight hair..with blue eyes no less. Not that he actually existed…but it’s certainly not how he’s described in the bible.

    • Codewizard

I seriously doubt the vandals understood that.

I do know THAT YOU DON’T know it either.

      • Carmenalex

Really? Because it seems pretty obvious…especially with the huge emphasis on the word white…the only word with alll caps. This was a statement…an obvious one.

  • agingcynic

If they are trying to say that religious people (and/or Catholics) are mean hypocrites while they are not, they are not off to a good start.

    • Wachinagi

While religious people in general are mean hypocrites, that isn’t what they were trying saying here, they were just making a joke. Which just goes to show another couple of points about religious people: They read meaning into things where none is implied, and have zero sense of humor.

  • Pluto Animus

According to Catholic doctrine, every time a priest blesses the (white) communion wafer, it magically becomes Jesus meat.

Thus, God is the Other White Meat.

    Brilliant!

    • Codewizard

It does not become MEAT. Fool. it’s symbolic. Geez. I’m not Catholic and I understand that.

      • DonnaBianca

Because you are not Catholic, you do not understand the doctrine of transubstantiation, in which the wafer is indeed ‘Jesus meat’. Here, let Wikipedia help you:

“In theology, transubstantiation (in Latin, transsubstantiatio, in Greek μετουσίωσις metousiosis) is the doctrine that, in the Eucharist, the substance of the bread and the wine used in the sacrament is literally, not merely as by a sign or a figure, but in actual reality as well, changed into the substance of the Body and the Blood of Jesus…”

So, yes – in some sects of Christianity, the communion wafer is regarded as literally being the body of Jesus – but only after it’s been blessed by a priest.

So if the idea of this prank was to point out that in Catholicism, the communion wafer is both “the other white meat” and “god” – then that really is kind of brilliant.

But most likely, the ‘miracle’ of transubstation, like so many other things in Christian mythology, was borrowed from earlier Pagan theology, especially the mystery religions.

It’s important to remember that believing in god means you’ve failed an intelligence test.

    • Codewizard

So believing in Evolution makes you intelligent. It takes MORE faith, to do that.

      • Elvis Knucklehead

Faith is to believe something WITHOUT evidence.
Evolution has over 150 years of supporting evidence.

There, I taught you something. You’re welcome.

Umm, me thinks a ‘tard is deflecting again

  • shelby5

It’s a play on a classic pork-producers’ advertising campaign encouraging consumers to view pork as being more like chicken (white meat) than like beef (red meat)–and therefore healthier. The slogan was “Pork. The other white meat.” Google it. It was around for decades.

    • Codewizard

Google is not a verb. Speak English.

Beyond that, why trust Google, they hate America, and God. That’s why the left love them so much.

      • Elvis Knucklehead

        From The Oxford English Dictionary:
        GOOGLE
        verb
        [with object]
search for information about (someone or something) on the Internet using the search engine Google:on Sunday she googled an ex-boyfriend[no object]:I googled for a cheap hotel/flight deal

  • Madley

I wouldn’t call this vandalism. I’d call it a good prank.

    • Guest

It’s a little silly, them taking it so seriously. Do they know how many non-religious billboards are vandalized like this? The radio station isn’t being singled out because it’s religious, it’s being singled out because it’s a billboard with a huge amount of blank space.

…I would also like to point out that this Christian radio station’s bottom line is to make money through that billboard. If it said something like, “Give Money to the Needy!” I would be way more offended.

    • Codewizard

Vandelism is the defacing of something that does NOT belong to you. It’s a crime.

Prank? no, just bigotry on display; defended by intolerant bigots.

  • drumcircler .

“Try God” is far from an “uplifting” message. God has been tried and convicted of fiction for centuries. How about this for a billboard message: Try To Logically Defend Catholicism’s Cannibal Ritual.

Bottom line, godbots: your rituals are offensive, your condemnations of those who reject your archaic dogmas are vile, and your symbols of tortured corpses on a stick are detestable and symbolically similar to the corpses displayed to instill fear by Vlad the Impaler. You want martyr symbols? Try effigies of the thousands of young girls murdered as witches by your ‘uplifting’ mother church.

    • Greg Oropeza

      Amen!

      • Abraham Ishmael

The bible has scriptures of God and prophets committing all sorts of atrocities. There’s nothing moral or benevolent about it.

    • Codewizard

“thousands?” try less than half dozen. For someone who believes himself an intellectual; you are not very smart. Hmm, that must be why you think you are so smart.

BTW, the last time I checked; God did NONE OF THOSE THINGS.

      • Rani Bakr

Less than a dozen during the Salem Witch Trials maybe, but I bet they’re also including the Spanish Inquisition. So yes, thousands.

And whether God had a hand in any of those and similar atrocities is as debatable as whether or not he exists. The fact of the matter is that it was people exactly like you who performed these murders, and who continue to justify murder, and rape, assault, and treatment of other people as lesser world-wide in the name of your cruel and vicious desert god.

  • MRD

It’s amazing how much anti-Catholic bigotry there is in the above comments. Is it really that hard to accept a simple billboard with a religious message?

    • Reme

They’re just angry they don’t have the money to put another billboard

    • drumcircler .

Anti-Catholic bigotry amazes you MRD? Perhaps a worldwide pedophile ring is more acceptable to you than it is to some of us.

  • Hans

I’m sure these apes would have deface a billboard that read:

    Try Allah.
    The other dark meat.

Here these inferior species get away with it, but in AllahLand they would be sliced to pieces. Just hope they try to do it AllahLand since they would put them 6-foot under. We don’t need these ignorant apes in our society.

    • COYI214

How very Christian of you. Chances are the vandals themselves were white. Nice to see you acknowledging evolution by calling them apes though.

      • Codewizard

My how very bigoted of you COY. Where did he say he was Christian?

Also, if they have done this in a Muslim country; they WOULD BE KILLED. Of course in Muslim countries YOU DON’T HAVE A CHOICE but to follow Islam.

At no time did he acknowledge evolution. He called them a LOWER species. Not our ancestors.

Your bigotry is sad. Someone will pray for you.

      • Soka Sema

He didnt say he was a Christian
Btw is that a tranny in that pick?

  • Guest

    What does that even mean??

    • Codewizard

it’s a play on the ads for Pork, “the other white meat.”

notice they didn’t say it about Muslims. Guess they didn’t want to die.

      • Ken Berger

Religious zealots of all types are bad!

      • thorbjørn .

I prefer the slogan for Saskatchewan’s pork producers:

        Pork, the one you love.

  • Reme

Must have been the work of the KKK

    • Codewizard

Yes, those Democrats just can’t handle God, can they?

  • Greg Oropeza

It’s not that deep folks. If you have to ask “what does that even mean??” then you won’t understand the explanation.
Lighten up, it was pretty funny.

    • Codewizard

Grow up Greg, it’s NOT even close to funny … well, to adults it’s not.

Would you find it funny if it said:

Try Mohammed: the other WHITE meat

      or

Try Slavery: the best way to get brown sugar.

      or

Try Mexicans: The other BROWN meat that brings it’s own tortillas

      or

Try Greeks: The BROWN hole is waiting

      funny?

      • mc facepalm

        yes?

        • Abraham Ishmael

Absolutely! Religion = Slavery! Slavery is prevalent in the bible, remember? Learn something about the scriptures you think are so innocent and you’ll understand the opposition to the parasitic meme that is religion.

          • Soka Sema

            Wrong moron.
Slavey in the Old Testement is not chattle slavery , it’s servitude, where people sell their labor in advance, for pay, room , shelter and security
It’s no different than you working 3 weeks before getting a paycheck, except life is a heck of alot easier now then it was 2 thousand plus years ago
Chattle slavery is strickly. pagan and black african. They invented it ,they own it.

          • Abraham Ishmael

I wasn’t aware that involuntary slave labor was moral; nor was I aware that beating a slave with a rod was morally justified as long as the slave gets up “in a day or two.” You can’t simply point to other examples of slavery and expect that to make it ok in the bible.

      • Greg Oropeza

        Codewizard: That doesn’t make sense.
Mohammed is not inaccurately portrayed as being white, “the best way to get brown sugar” is not a known commercial jingle, “The other BROWN meat that brings it’s own tortillas” is not a known commercial jingle, “The BROWN hole is waiting” is not a known commercial jingle.
You don’t get sardonic humor. That’s okay. I don’t think it’s because you need to grow up, you may just live a dull life and take things too literally .

        • Greg Oropeza

I guess by using “Codewizard ” living a dull life is an oxymoron.

      • Ronny G. Chevrier

        very funny.

  • Codewizard

Only HATE FILLED LIBERALS (wait, that’s redundant) would do something like this. Attack those trying to better the world, as a way to show how you are bettering the world. yea, that works. NOT.

    • Abraham Ishmael

People buy into the false Left-Right political paradigm with great distraction. What if this has nothing to do with Conservatism or Liberalism? What if there’s something beyond that small, filtered mindset?

    • drumcircler .

No need to let your religious anger splash onto others, codewizard. Contradictions breed discomfort, so I sympathize with your frustration but disapprove of your antisocial tone. Perhaps a good calming down exercise would be for you to Try To Logically Defend Catholicism’s Cannibal Ritual. I’m listening.

    • John Smith

“Attack those trying to better the world”

who is doing that exactly? it’s advertising, chumply.

  • Abraham Ishmael

The bible is the easiest way to realize how evil and absurd Christianity is.

    Exodus 21:20-21
When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.

    • Soka Sema

You are using a non literal Bible

Try a real one….. It’s servant , not slave. He is his own money (work) and you are your own stupid.

8 And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:

      19 If
he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote
him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall
cause him to be thoroughly healed.

20 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.

21 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

      22 If
men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from
her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according
as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges
      determine.

      • Abraham Ishmael

You’re simply pointing to another version of the bible where you find a euphemism for the word “slave.” It’s called slavery: servants VOLUNTARILY work for money or an equivalent, and regardless there is nothing moral or just about owning another person as property; nor is there anything benevolent about striking a slave with a rod, period. These justifications and obfuscations for violent, immoral behavior are not just repulsive, but very dangerous to any society, and hindering to more peaceful progress.

      • Michael Devaney

“It’s used by the atheists, perverts and other mentally ill people” People who read the fucking bible are mentally ill, its a fucking fairy tail, a book of stories (with fucked up meanings)

When you die, you rot in the fucking ground with a bunch of other bodies, deal with it.

      • Greg Oropeza

I’m glad you agree that the King James Version (used by most protestants) and the NAB and other bibles used by Catholics , are used by “…perverts and other mentally ill people.”

      • Carmenalex

Oh a servant not a slave..that makes it all right to beat the ever loving crap out of him/her. Sorry…your version is just as disgusting.

    • metoo

      oh please

  • Joe Swharta

Indeed, there is a God. You will answer for your lies and your thefts and adulteries. You will answer for every sin you’ve ever committed.

There were 2 thieves crucified with Jesus. One had the right answer, one had the wrong one.

Alternatively, let your right arm save you. :)

Yet make no mistake, you will deal with your maker.
