And Now Karen Spilka Uses a Photo of Governor Patrick

The race for Markey’s seat is marked by mailers with sketchy endorsement implications.

Yesterday, voters in the 5th Congressional district came home to find a mailer from a third party juxtaposing the face of Senator Elizabeth Warren with that of candidate Katherine Clark. Karen Spilka’s campaign was among those taking umbrage at the false implication of support from Warren. Turns out, the Spilka campaign had their own piece in the mail showing their candidate with Governor Deval Patrick—who has also not endorsed in the race.

This one is not nearly as blatant as the Women Vote! mailer, but arguably dances across the same line. As you can see below, it prominently features Spilka at Patrick’s shoulder as the governor signs one of her bills.

“It is not the same at all,” says Spilka campaign manager Eric Hyers. “Their mail was deliberately intended to imply an endorsement of Elizabeth Warren. Nobody can say that this is intended to suggest the support of Deval Patrick.”

The other side of the mailer shows Spilka at her desk, with a photo of her and President Barack Obama clearly visible.

they are all far from scandalous and spilka making a point on the clark mailer (that clark had nothing to do with putting together) is the real issue here. They’re playing politics with a nonissue (probably put on the radar by a source at one of the campaigns). What campaigns do sometimes that is wrong is to include quotes about the great work they’ve done in the past or taken past endorsements that they’ve received and push them off as current endorsements. None of these come remotely close to that. The clark mailer draws similarities in strength and position. it never says there is an endorsement. neither does this. again, all of them have pictures with candidates, Senators and the Governor on their public and campaign facebook page, often with statements of support. All of them. ALL. This is such a house of cards that the campaigns are trying to call each other scandalous on that it was bound to topple sooner rather than later.

    “It’s
appalling to me that Katherine Clark would be open to cutting Social
Security and Medicare,” said Sciortino. “We’re Democrats. We’re the ones
that stand up for seniors—not cave to the Tea Party on the most
important social safetynet in the last century. I’m proud to stand with
Ed Markey in my pledge never to cut these vital American programs.” – from Carl Sciortino’s facebook page. They all do it. Its perfectly legitimate to say you stand on the same side of the issues as other people.

arandolph — a tiny picture of the Governor where his head is 1/2″ tall can’t be compared with the Clark mailing.

I have to ask you — was Clark present at the folllowing Emilys List reception at at $7.3 million mansion in Cambridge — or was she not?

Emily’s list endorses Clark on September 20. Emily’s list has reception to raise money for Clark on September 30. Mailings paid for on Sept. 30, October 4, October 8, October 10 according to Center for Responsive Politics. I remember when Jon Stewart was making fun of the supposed “independent expenditures” made by Sheldon Adelson on behalf of New Gingrich. Do you really believe that this expenditure was completely independent of the Clark campaign?
