Update, October 28, 4 p.m.: Poland native Radoslaw Czerkawski, 32, was arrested and will be arraigned in Quincy District Court on Tuesday. He faces 11 counts of animal cruelty in connection with the Puppy Doe case. Police said Czerkawski is currently in Connecticut, where he was found by investigators last week, and is being transported back to Massachusetts.

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said Czerkawski did not fight rendition, and will also be facing charges for misleading investigators in the case. Animal cruelty is considered a felony in Massachusetts. Violations of the law can lead to a sentence of up to five years in state prison. “The investigation took a little bit of time because we wanted to make sure we got it right,” said Keenan.

More information about the case—and how they caught the alleged suspect—will be provided on Tuesday, following Czerkawski’s arraignment.

A spokesperson from the Animal Rescue League of Boston, which offered money for any information leading to the arrest of a suspect, said the organization will work with the Quincy Police Department to determine who will get the reward. Officials said a tip led them to Czerkawski’s arrest.

Animal Rescue League officials said in a statement that they were relieved an arrest has been made. “From the very beginning of the investigation into Puppy Doe’s abuse, we wanted the person responsible for this heinous crime to be found and brought to justice as quickly as possible.  The Quincy Police Department and the District Attorney shared our sense of urgency in identifying the perpetrator, and we want to thank both organizations for their diligence and continuous hard work in pursuit of justice for Puppy Doe,” they said. “For the safety of people and animals in our community, we feel a tremendous sense of relief that a suspect is now in custody.

Earlier: There may be a break in the case of Puppy Doe.

Police in Quincy say a “person of interest” is in custody that may be connected to the brutal beating of a pit bull mix that was left for dead in a park in August, and later euthanized because of the severity of her injuries.

According to Quincy Police Captain John Dougan, officers are talking to an out-of-state suspect that allegedly misled officials investigating the case.

Radoslaw Czerkawski, 32, was arrested in Connecticut last Wednesday for not cooperating with officials. Police are working on getting the alleged suspect back to Massachusetts for further questioning, Dougan told Boston.

Dougan would not say whether or not Czerkawski is the person responsible for the extensive wounds inflicted on the dog, which included burn marks and broken bones that were pulled apart at the limb, but a press conference is scheduled for Monday at 4 p.m. in Quincy to further discuss his arrest.

When news surfaced in September about the dog’s injuries and eventual death, Puppy Doe supporters put up thousands of dollars to help get information from the general public about the person responsible for the dog’s severe beating. Several Facebook groups were also formed, aimed at identifying a possible suspect.

Local animal rights organizations and shelters also offered up rewards in the days following the dog’s death. A candlelight vigil, which brought hundreds of supporters and their pets to Quincy, was held for the dog near the location where she was found.

The case has remained open and active over the past month, but investigators are hoping to bring it to a close. Dougan said he was waiting to hear from the District Attorney, before discussing Czerkawski’s arrest in greater detail.

Well now I can say I’ve seen the face of pure evil. I hope they convict this sorry excuse for a human.

  • Katie Kisluk

Wow! Only 5 years in jail?!? I thought it was 5 years for each of the 11 counts or a maximum of 55 years. This guy is a sociopath and needs to be put away for good where he can’t harm anyone – animal or human – ever again. He is sure to repeat this evil behavior if he is ever let free. Lock him up and throw away the key!

    • Guest

@katie_kisluk:disqus hey Katie, It is up to five years for each count. The way it read made it sound otherwise. I clarified the law. Thanks!

  • Carol Batten

Five years?Come on.This repulsively hideous monster should never live another second of it’s life without being locked in a small cage.I can only hope this is a wake up call to law makers that they need to do something about these weak ass laws against animal abuse.I hope he never makes it out alive.

    Close the borders!

  • Andrea Smith

So happy that they caught this sadistic sociopath!!! This absolute sicko needs to pay for what he did to an innocent and helpless little dog!!! He probably killed many times before and would continue to kill if not stopped!! These type of sociopaths many times go on to hurt humans when the thrill of hurting animals is spent!!!

i would venture to say there is a correlation with puppy Kiya tortures and the old lady..he dumped Kiya’s spent broken body right at the same time the old lady died….. all the while the puppy was tormented he was convincing the old lady to hand over her bank roll…mmmm…. he is beyond sick.. he victimizes innocent animals (i speculate there could have been others that we dont know about) and the elderly.. that was his purpose. This is the type of demented mind who will continue this path of violence for his own pleasure of feeling in control. Anxiously awaiting Tuesday’s trial..!!
PS: Annie Jones although i commend you for volunteering at your local shelter, you really don’t quite understand the Puppy Doe case. It has had such an enormous outpoar nationwide that Mass. laws have been changed. Thanks to all the ppl who called, emailed, text, FB, tweeted, etc at their Reps from THEIR KEYBOARD…including 23 animal-protection groups, the
      MSPCA, the
Animal Rescue League of Boston and FOUR PAWS International, ALL signed a
letter urging lawmakers to pass the bill by July 31…AND IT HAS!
I THINK THIS IS A LOT BETTER THEN JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS VOLUNTEERING AT YOUR SHELTER ANNIE JONES!!
      WHAT YOU SAY TO THAT!!!!

  • Annie Jones

I find it sad about this dog but I find it more frightening that people will go out of there way like this to find a suspect for an assaulted dog than for murdered, molested and abducted human children. Maybe that is exactly how we develop these monsters to start with.

    • Phoebe Kushner

What the fuck are u talking about annie jones….this case merited n.deserved.the attention it received!!!

    • Julie Carner

Why are you even on this site Annie Jones. You should educate yourself before making stupid comments. Murders, molesters, etc. often start off abusing animals then they turn to people. Besides that innocent dog deserved a happy life. She was tortured you idiot. And, for the record – you are frightening!

    • Kat

Well it is said that serial killers often start abusing animals before they move to humans. So we might have stopped that psycho from doing something worse. With that said, you are an idiot Annie.

    • Annie Jones

You sit and say this is so cruel and bash me, fine do so but what about those who bait animals of all kinds for there “money” to be made at pit fighting. Hmmm. Don’t see to many national man hunts to stop that hitting the news and it goes on every day. Do you know it takes multiple animals to train one good fighting dog? Maybe some of you should do a bit of research about that. I know all about the serial killer theory that they abuse animals first and the statistics to support child abuse, the abuser hurts animals etc. I never said it was not sad, or wrong it is but I think it is sick how many of you bashing me probably never donated a dime to this Puppy Doe only sat behind your computers spewing nor have you probably ever done one thing to stop or investigate pit fighting, nor child molesters, abductors etc. That is what you amount to, on here calling names like idiot and comments like you shouldn’t even be on this site. Maybe if people put that much effort into helping other people then the individuals might actually be found instead of being locked in houses for ten years for example. Boy oh boy. What I am saying is this much effort put into this Puppy Doe should be the amount of effort put into every single child that is missing or abused every single DAY! Then again I guess some of you just miss that because it is not national news and didn’t make a major headline.

      • DEE DEE

Annie Jones sounds like you could use some mental help yourself .What part of this did you not understand ? This beautiful creature of Gods was tortured repeatedly and kept alive to suffer at this sick demented filthy freeks pleasure ,this was fun and entertainment for him .I dont know where your from but police and authorities do answer to the calls of everyone , your problem sounds personal and I suggest you get some help for mental illness ,NOTHING should ever suffer ,im just going to ignore you from here your not right annie jones you have a sickness of your own to deal with. And for justice 44, Kat ,Julie C. ,Andrea S.,Carol B. ,Katie K. , and Britannia I agree with all of you ,this person is one horrible sick thing and needs to be taken out of society and made to pay for what he done.

        • Annie Jones

Good DEE DEE I would prefer people like you ignore me. You know nothing about me. I work in animal rescue on my own time with my own money. I do not get paid for anything ever. In my eyes every animal or child that is beaten, starved, received broken bones etc. deserves the type of media attention this Puppy Doe got each and every time. I see people like you guys on here every day while I help animals. You bash people behind your computer but never do anything out in the real world to stop things like this that go on every day. You jump on board when the news hits the main stream media all the while hundreds of thousand of animals die every year. Why don’t you try going down to your local shelter and volunteering. Work behind the scenes so you can see EXACTLY what goes on. Then instead of getting on here writing you can pull your head out and help an animal. I have nothing personal in this accept for people like you who are so hateful you sit and call names to spend your time instead of DOING something. Also I know exactly how the police respond. They are busy and sorry but do not get to everyone. A lot of times dispatch will delay calls of animals and tell you to call animal control. If animal control is closed to bad you wait until they are open in the area I live now. I have several police in my family in all aspects of the job. One teaches courses for the FBI. Honestly you must be a fool if you think every missing child gets the same media coverage. They do not nor do the majority of abused animals get the same media coverage as Puppy Doe did. Also I personally have reported incidents to animal control over the years and have had them ignored to the point the animals have DIED! It all depends on the area and the funding available.
You say I have an illness, I feel the same about you. You are blind to what goes on around you everyday. That is why so many animals and children suffer in this world because of people like you who only want to do or say something if there is a majority to jump on board so you feel popular and important otherwise you turn a blind eye and do nothing. Do some animals and missing children in this world a favor get off your computer and go help because obviously you didn’t read what I wrote nor understand the meaning behind it. This type of effort put in for Puppy Doe should be the type of effort put in for EVERY child missing, abused or abducted EVERY SINGLE DAY!
          SHAME ON YOU!!!

There is no time that could ever be enough for anyone taking the life of an animal, child, adult or any other living being. No excuse for all the abuse on this earth and no excuse for anyone else to have to pay for the housing & feeding of these abusers either. It is proven that abuse of children/humans begins with animals and clearly the severity of the abuse this animal suffered is an indication of what he probably has done before in his life (and who knows what to this woman he was caring for). It is sickening and i’m sure once they investigate we will hear some more sick things this freak did. No reason for him to go to prison for a day. Send him to one of those animal shelter gas chambers for exactly how many days he tortured that poor girl. He is sick and will get out and do it again.

If proved he did this it would be best if her were never loose again, but at least I hope he has to serve maximum penalties on all possible charges.
