John Henry Might Be Selling The Worcester Telegram & Gazette
A report offers a reason for his reticence about the paper.
John Henry’s comparative lack of interest in the other Massachusetts newspaper he purchased from the New York Times Co., the¬†Worcester Telegram & Gazette, makes more sense in the wake of a Boston Business Journal report that says he’s getting ready to sell it off.
BBJ cites¬†“reliable sources close to the (Boston) Globe’s operations,” who say that a plan to sell off the Telegram & Gazette, which came alongside the Globe as part of the New England Media Group, is only awaiting Henry’s approval. Whereas Henry has visited the Boston Globe newsroom several times since acquiring the paper, and published a long op-ed¬†about his plans for it, he’s shown no such interest in Worcester. Speculation that he might sell began as Central Massachusetts lawmakers wrote Henry a letter urging him to make a visit. The Telegram & Gazette even published a column addressed to Henry touting Worcester’s many attractions (as if a dearth of tourism opportunities was informing his business schedule.)
The BBJ said that there’s no word on a buyer, but people suspect it might be Gatehouse Media Inc.,¬†¬†a New York publisher that owns a bunch of¬†weeklies and smaller daily papers¬†in Massachusetts.
