Mayor Marty Walsh has the snow to thank for saving him the embarrassment of wearing a Broncos jersey in front of his fellow mayors from across the country.

Citing the impending storm that’s set to drop up to 10 inches of  snow in the Boston area through Wednesday afternoon, Walsh canceled his trip to Washington, D.C., where he was scheduled to attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Because the Patriots fell to the Denver Broncos during the AFC Championship game on Sunday, Walsh was supposed to wear a Broncos jersey during one of the sessions, after losing his first official sports bet as mayor to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors runs from January 22 through 24, which would have given Walsh two more chances to own up to his end of the bargain, but a spokesperson from his office said the mayor has canceled the entire trip.

There was no immediate answer available about when he would don the rival sportswear.

Besides missing the chance to slip into a blue and orange jersey with the Broncos logo on it, Walsh will be missing sessions on “Five things financially responsible mayors need to know,” and meetings about urban technology.

Because the Patriots lost, as part of the bet, Walsh will also have to present the Denver mayor with five pounds of Boston’s famous chocolate turtles from Phillips Candy House in Dorchester and a mini-library’s worth of books signed by some famous local authors.

Walsh wasn’t the only one to slip out of an unsavory situation due to the snowy weather creeping up along the coastline. Governor Deval Patrick postponed his final “State of the State” address as the top elected official, which is sometimes met with scrutiny as he outlines major plans for the Commonwealth over the next year.

According to Patrick’s people, the speech, which was supposed to happen at 7 p.m. Tuesday night, will go on hold while the governor focuses on keeping constituents safe from the extreme weather, and coordinates plans to clear the roadways for the Wednesday morning commute.

As a result of the snowstorm, Patrick sent home non-essential state employees Tuesday afternoon, and urged private businesses to do the same.

Walsh implemented a parking ban in the city, effective at 6 p.m., and canceled school as well.
